It's a Bar-faced Grubfish (Parapercis nebulosus)

Look at the banding over the eyes. I think cowfish is right with the Parapercis nebulosus

The pic NickyG posted IMO is not, the identification key being the the black spot between the second and fith dorsal spines.

It is most likely a Pinguipedid genus Parapercis but species ?

May belong to a different family though, I gave up last time it was posted.

Agreed Steve. I'm not 100% certain on the species, but it's definitely that genus. I just base most of my ID's on Wildlife to Moreton Bay and they don't have every species possible, but they're usually close enough to get the genus correct.

But I am 100% certain it is not a Seargeant Baker. I've caught both, know what both are like. It just isn't...

We just generally call them Grubfish as there are a couple of different species of them found in the Bay.

This was a hard one, finally after going through the descriptions of all 42 described Pinguipedids found in the western pacific it is Parapercis pulchella the Harlequin Sandsmelt.

Aahhhh, the old Harlequin Sandsmelt.....just as I thought :laugh:

Its a bar faced weaver which most people know as a rock whiting. Somewhat common in the eastern bay in light rubble/shale areas. Usually a good indicator you have drifted off of the sand chasing winter whiting.

One thing I notice in the reports is that one fish has 10 bloody names, and god help you if your comparing with interstate fishos.
