Rock whiting

I've been catching Rock Whitng in the bay recently as a by catch and was wondering if anyone has eaten them and if so what they are like? - I haven't kept any so far because I'd rather put them back. :fishing:

Yeah i catch them all the time as well. I originally thought they were a relation to grinners until an old mate told me it was a rock whiting. Plenty of 'em around, I'm also wondering if they'd go ok on the bbq

Found a pick of rock whiting

The females differ slightly in appearance to the males, having a dark stripe down the side.

Thanks but I don't think we get this one up here in Qld. I think its only down around Vic or sthn NSW.

My first thought too when it came out of the water - but not a grinner. - I found it in 'Grant's' - it's a 'Bar-faced Weever' aka rock whiting or grubfish. according to Grant - 'It is a well-flavoured panfish'

quite a nice looking fish... whats the legal limit on it?? It'd look pretty nice as a smaller one in a tank.

according to DPI website the 23cm min size applies to Summer, Goldline and Northern whiting... I'm just not sure where this whiting fits in...
