Wongi Waterhole

Well while we were at Lenthalls we decided to go down to Wongi waterhole to check it out.

Wongi Waterhole is about 5k closer distance from Lenthalls as the Burrum River Van park. It costs $4.50 per person, has an amenity block, with one flush toilet and 1 cold shower for each sex.

Camping is not controlled, basically where you pitch you camp is it. Permits are a self serve system on site, you can use cash, check or credit card. Put the rego papers in the honour box, and fix a supplied tag to your camp.

There is no power, no water, no dump point. (Water could be taken from amenity block, but it only has about a 10000l tank, with quite a small roof to feed it.

The ground is flat wallum country, and is adjacent to the water holes themselves, which are long narrow reed surrounded waterholes (might be good for shrimp). The access road in is on par with the Lenthalls road - dirt and rough!

It must get used fairly well, as it is pretty much dirt, no grass remaining, poor drainage (plenty of evidence of water pooling from the recent rain), although it had not formed mud puddles, the ground itself is fairly sandy.

To be honest, the price is not much less than what a powered site in Burrum River costs, where you get hot showers and grass to camp on. Travel time to Lenthalls is probably about the same. I would not bother with it.

Better accomodation at Burrum heads we got a listing of rental houses which start from $370 for a week. They are older style Queenslanders/weekenders handy to boat ramp and local shops and pub. An extra 20 ks to travel from burrum river caravan park but well worth the drive. Feral and I are concidering another trip in February next year. Here is a link to one of the houses we are thinking of. It sleeps 6 with plenty of onsite parking.

Looks like it didnt work you will have to cut and paste it to your browser. There are at least a dozen places that we reckon would be suitable with plenty of boat parking.
