Summer Classic - A Success

Last weekend, 22nd-24th of February saw the 3rd annual Summer Classic fishing competition held in the glorious locale of Noosa. The 2012 Summer Classic was also held in Noosa and by popular demand, and the support of Davo's Compleat Angler Noosa, it looks like at Noosa it shall remain! With some average weather leading up to the event there was some scepticism as the fishing quality for the duration of the competition. However at the last minute in great style the weather fined up and remained so for the duration of the event.

The first day of the event...

The Friday at HQ saw dozens of anglers arrive with enthusiastic faces and plans to hatch. A massive thanks to Henry Do from Obsession Fishing and Adrian Pilgrim from Spotters (both event sponsors) for helping me man the HQ on that day as at times things were hectic! The team at Davo's were also great giving the out of towners the advice they needed and the coffee I needed to get through the day!

The fish did prove to be tougher than usual to track down during the event but there were significant captures made. With a enormous amount of fresh in the system, the competition really become more about piecing together as many fish from the target list as possible as opposed to targeting key trophy specimens... Species such as whiting, bream, flathead and trevally were submitted in abundance and any angler who could add a couple more to their list was bound to do well.

Summer Classic competitors on the water...

Due to the awesome weather many anglers spent huge hours on the water during the event. If they were lucky they would have run into Peter, the owner of Davo's on the water. Peter was driving around with some awesome gifts to hand out. During the course of the weekend over 120 cans of drink and bottles of water were handed out, over $2000 worth of River 2 Sea lures and 6 pairs of Spotters Sunglasses! Most of these gifts were presented to quite unsuspecting anglers who were pretty stoked with the situation.

As the three days drew to a close rumors were circulating about this fish or that, but the suspense was held until the final submissions started pouring through the door. For a good hour the top three changed and changed again until one angler came in and smashed it with an overall length of 216.5cm... Based on previous entries this seemed rather insurmountable and on the stroke of 12 the winner was obvious. After a quick ascertaining of the 2nd and 3rd placings, a check of the photographs and of course, a sausage on bread and a beer, we were ready to award the prizes.

Congratulations to the Summer Classic Noosa Champions:

1st: Jayden Tomlinson (216.5cm)

2nd: Eli Johns (167cm)

3rd: Joel Greig (149.5cm)

Angus Gorrie from AFO and Henry Do from Obsession Fishing present the winners with thier loot...

After the prizes were concluded a plethora of lucky door prizes were awarded provided by Davo's and AFO's own Collin Mott it was time to call the weekend to an end. It was a sensational event and the format worked amazingly well. A massive thanks has to go out to all the sponsors of the event:

Davo's Compleat Angler Noosa

Searing Tackle (Damiki and Pontoon 21 Lures)

Obsession Fishing (Nordic Stage Rods)

Spotters Sunglasses

River 2 Sea Lures

Collin Mott (The best dry bags I know)!

A further massive thanks must go out to all the anglers who attended the event. We look forward to seeing you at future events so please watch this space!

Yep great weekend indeed even if the fishing was a little quiet for some of us. Onthechew and I headed out offshore to try our luck for a Mac but no luck on that front but we were kept entertained for a while by some willing Mac Tuna. Looking forward to next year and might actually take a week off work and make a holiday of it. Plus a big thanks to all the sponsers and the people who organised it and maybe next year the AFO crowd can out number the local entrants. :)

Cheers

Mark

Only pic I took of the weekend was of the CrazyWalrus in some tight county
