queensland mj's around toowong?

hey all,

has anyone ever caught a mangrove jack around the toowong, st lucia reaches of the river? was down there today for work and saw what looked like some nice jack country.

i have never heard of one but thats just me i think you would be pretty lucky to get one that far down

my friend said he caught a baby mangrove jack in his crabpot in his back yard on westlake drive.. hope hes not lying

I remember a member, might have been Tim, who got a jack at the mouth of Oxley creek.

Live in toowong and so the areas around Toowong, Indooroo, St Lucia are my regular haunts. Unfortunately never seen nor caught MJs before.

Which part were u at exactly might I ask?

viperon i was at a construction site at st lucia. has its own pontoon and a heap of rubble, concrete blocks fallen trees and mangroves. will be going there a fair bit over the next few months so i think i'll chuck a rod in the truck and looksy.

i've heard of one being found in a crab pot in jindalee... i reckon they would go that far up for sure- everything else does, even the dolphins!

well i can see no reason why they wouldn't venture up that far, like you said roobs everything else does. they can adapt to freshwater so that won't put them off, seems to be plenty of feed for them and i've caught them in murkier systems than the brizzy.

Like buzzid says, they can adapt to fresh water. They are in Awoonga. So they should go as far up as the weir (M Crosby) if there is enough water.

As for Jacks in Toowong, I hope they are! I could go for a Jack session after school, it would be heaven!

i lost a good jack back in feb this year,it was not far from the old powerstation, thats toowong isn't it?

also got 2 small ones in the aquairium passage just near the bridges

take a drive out toward the port of brisbane along lytton road and you cant miss the spot couple of road bridges and a railway bridge going over a creek

I think the old power station Jeff's talking about is at Tennyson, a few km's upstream from Toowong, more or less opposite Sir John Chandler Park.

expect the unexpected in the brisbane river;)

they are there it's just a matter of targeting them and putting in the hours

remember at this time of year you're better off livebaiting them than chucking lures

save the lures till the water is a bit warmer

There are Jakcs further up river than Toowong, so they have to be there as well.

Dont know.

But i have seen 2. One about 10 years ago and one only last year.

I dont see why it should be a rare occurance with threaddies, flatties, bream, whiting being a common occurance all the way to Kooka...

Oh if you only want photo;s from that far up, Gerty has a great pick of one he got about 300m upstream from Breakku creek at Newstead. Its about 45cm and he got it on an SX40 while chasing bream. Lucky!

Very dark colouring and great looking fish.

nar only interested in ones further up, seen mortician pull some animals in that lower reach area.

Yeah well over the summer it might worth investigating. You would think with all the people live baiting for threadies that one might be caught as bycatch.

There is some hardcore structure further up though. Like where The Island pulls up and at the old powerhouse (now the Tennyson developement). Its be worth some checking out i reckon.

Worst case scenario, by catch of salmon or jew or whatever else.

if it was up to me id send those shithead kids who spraypaint everything down all summer to do community service testing the waters, i got better thing to do like catch marlin, but ill be keen if the jacks are in any numbers
