the most up stream iv heard a jewy being caught is under the indro bridges, but thats 1 of those storyes that is real old. i dont think they come up to the jindalee boat ramp, neva seen or heard anyone up here maby decades ago they were but i dont think so any more.

There were a few reports about 4 yrs ago about school jew caught up there. Only about a year ago i think theres a thread here where someone cast netted a baby jewie too. They're there, just got to be there right place right time sort og thing i guess

If U fellows are thinking of chasing sum Jews head down to the mouth of your fav river on a lowtide just after a heavy down pour say 1 or 2 days of rain. Start by using your fish finder to locate the deepest hole/s or even deep steps(jews love to follow steps). Once the tide starts to ebb deploy live baits (I like to use live herring) and hang on!! If no jews are found in that hole wait till the tide starts to run in and motor on upstream ahead of the tide till ya find the next hole/s or steps and repeat this process until ya reel is smokin....;)

River mouths tend to have a very fast flow of water moving in or out depending on the tide and alot going out especially after heavy rain. This is why it is fished on the ebb tide even though there will be still sum run it is easier to get the baits down deep into the holes and to also hold a better position. Also by moving upstream ahead of the run in u will be able to fish the ebb tide for hours which is the bonus.

Put this all together with the lead up to a full moon or just after the full moon and u are sure to have your arms pulled from there sockets!!!:)

i remember once flathead telling me a story about wen he went fishing under the jindalee bridge at the skatepark and they caught a few "river perch" or sumthing like that. they looked like little jew fish maby they were school jew??

Im not to sure

Pinky will know im sure!!

Yeah there's heaps of "river perch" at the yeronga reach of the river. I've seriously caught around 20-30 with my brother in a 1 hour session.

Dunno if they're baby jew though....will need to do a session there soon and take some pix.

Would Jewies, be finniky over a light wire trace at night time at the surf at sandon ( little fishing pressure off the beach) just incase we hook onto a shark.. and if we couldnt get live bait would just pillies, mullet fillet, squid? be the best out of the frozen stuff?

catch a tailor off the beach and use it live or filleted

There was an episode of Fishin Trips on Foxtel Channel 183 with Jason Keneddy and Steve Wilson a couple of weeks back they were fishing one of Gavin Dunnes spots(QFM) in the brissy river they got a nice snapper a good threadie then just before dusk they nailed a 15kg+ Jewie on a 7" sp in the back ground you could see terminals and just beside them was one of the concret marker beacons so by my calculations I reckon they might of been up around the Hamilton stretch of the river.

Get amongst them they are they Fishin Trips goes to air roughly 4weeks after shooting.

Hope this helps

you just gave away a couple of my favourite spots and the best bait!!! :P you'll struggle off snapper these days owing to the sand pumping thing, fingal and norries head, beach at south straddie and beach and breakwalls at brunswick are also pretty good ;)

my pb is 18kg (about 42lb). you win again jeff!

actually yesterday i got 3 pike and used them all as livie with a friend of mine. pity neither of us could set the hook since i was using 3-11lb rod, 2lb fireline and 8lb leader and he's using a 17 dollars rod which is VERY VERY soft.

good to see the pike biteing, might take my inflatable boat to lytton and see if i can get some on soft plastics

No offence ive tried so hard in brisbane to get jewies, It has happened however i think they are just the kind of fish that.....well....You just need to be in the right place at the right time. I very much doubt if there is anyone here who can say ill gaurentee you a jew today. I have caught them half way through moon cycle, new and Full, on live bait, and even on frozen crap servo pillies. My best spot so far is DI point.

alot of the old jew specialist used to say they could smell when there were jew around, jew and jew water have a very distinct smell and once you have caught a few you get to know the smell.

i believe them too, if you get the chance to have a good sniff of a jew fresh out of the water you'll see what they are talking about.

The oldies at Straddy use Live Whiting off the beach all the time for Jew bait. Or mullet if the mullet runs are on.

Basically just match the bait to whats around.

I reckon in the Brisbane River poddy mullet, herring or big prawns would have to be the logical choice.
