Technique Specific Tackle

Hi Guys,

Just wondering what outfits you guys own and what you use them for specifically. After receiving a few new additions from Troutlet including a beautiful 7' 1-6lb number I can't wait to try out:cheer: , I'm now almost finished accumulating my light-mid weight spinning rods and they all have different purposes.

Just wondering if everyone else buys rods for specific reasons like, "throwing jackals at NDP" "casting spinnerbaits at Hinze" "casting unweighted plastics over weedbeds" "casting crankbaits for Bass in shallow streams" "working small poppers over sand flats" "slash baiting for Jacks and Cod".

Or do most people just buy one or two rods and use them for a whole range of applications.

i have 2 main rods that i use and they were both bought for plastic and chasing bream, flatties. as you all know ive been using them to chase threaddies so it shows that with mid ranged gear they can actually handle quite a bit.

i have

7ft6 shimano bream finesse, 6ft8 shimano rack raider

Daiwa Revros 2004,4lb fireline - Daiwa Freams Kix 2000 8lb cajun braid.

both reels balance with either rod reasonably well,i often change the reel and rod combo around

I have a few....

-Calcutta 200b spooled with 50lb fireline on a 6 1/2 foot 6-12lb Angler braid buster for impoundment barra.

-Calcutta 200b spooled with 20lb fireline on a 6 1/2 foot 6-12lb Angler braid buster for river barra.

-Pfluger Echlon spooled with 8lb vanish on a 6 1/2 foot 3-8lb Pfluger trion rod for bass and flathead on plastics.

-Shimano 2500 Spirex spooled with 4lb vanish on a 2-4lb custom rod that I built for trout about 6 years ago but is used for bream and fish in the estuaries.

-Shimano charter special spooled with 30lb fireline on a 6 foot 10-20lb Ugly Stick. This rod was used solely for chasing black jew when I lived in Darwin but has not been used since moving to the gold coast.

-An old Abu Garcia from about 1980? spolled with 15lb fireline on a 7 foot custom rod for chasing reef fish. The reel is by far the best of the lot but it is starting to get a bit stiff lately though.

That is it...... I have a flyrod as well bet is not used much anymore as I lost all my flies overboard while chasing tuna up in Darwin:angry:

hey angus imho the calcutta with 30lb is a bit overkll for threaddies, but at least if you hookup properly you know your not gonna lose the fish hahahah

Yeah I agree.

If it was "Just" for threddies I would down grade.

The original plan for that reel was for Awoonga although I never made it. Although this has been proven a myth as well, at the time the general consensus for Awoonga barra due to size and snags was that even 30lb was undergunned :)

I have 4 Breamin sticks that each get something different put on them each outing. Usually 1 light jighead, 1 heavier jighead, 1 shallow hard body and 1 deep hard body depending on the conditions and area I am fishing.

For catching bass I take 1 stick for spinners, 1 for jackals and a spin rod for plastics. Thats as specific as I get. At various times they all get used for a different purpose though so none are really specialised equipment.

I've probably got as many rods, not that many reels though, maybe 20?

Choice is fairly easy, baitcaster or spin depending on reel I want to use.

over or less than 6 foot (less if fishing from boat, or walking along the Stanley)

under 5kg for Bass and smaller

upto 8kg for barra

10 to 12kg for sharks

surf rods for surf

Thanks for all the replies. Interesting to see how heavy or light everyone fishes for different things.

Anyway, at the moment I'm running three spinning rods for breaming that all alternate on my TP2500 with 6lb TD Sensor. A 1-6lb Tactix, 4-6lb Daiwa Procaster X (modified) and my rack raider.

I just got a 6-12lb phfluger Trion for Casting lipless cranks at NPD. Yet to see how it performs. I may also use this rod for jigging big plastics for jew/flatties

Also have my TD Advantage 3000 and 10-17lb matching combo I use for slash baiting and casting poppers for Trevs (as yet unsuccesfully)

Also have just ordered a 5000 Stradic FI for surf fishing but haven't chosen a matching rod yet.

Add to that about 10 older rods I barely use and that's my quiver at the moment. I also have my eye on a cheap BC rod Jeryl is selling to use with Kev's Calcutta that he lets me borrow to replace my old school BC like my ABU Ambassador and Shimano Coriolis. Eventually I'll get a nice baitcaster like an Alphas but that's a while away.

Oh and I'm going to get a fly fishing outfit next summer too!!!:cheer:

Why not an alvey? They rule the beach.

yeah, I want to be able to spin slugs and work poppers etc. It has a 5.7 retrieve so I can get my bait back in quicker. Also I really love the carefree aspect of alveys but I always seem to get the line stuck around the drag star so I have to using spinning gear to idiot proof it. Plus I just like using spinning gear more. oh and it has 25lb of drag to hopefully stop a 20kg Jew!!:woohoo:

We will have to get together a shore based tailor trip this winter, so we can all take the surf gear out of mothballs! Might even change the 1975 12lb mono on my Alvey specially!

that's a good idea feral. I'd be there for sure. :)

I'll have to have a look through the calendar, and see if we can find a spare weekend.
