Monduran, Oct 2008

Hey all,

Im looking at doing a weekend road trip to Monduran in oct for my (hopefully) first barra. Just wondering if any one can vouch for any good camp sites etc. Will be taking wife and kid, so toilets and showers would be preferable but not a must have.

Any hints for areas in the dam to fish? Ive been told theres some good timber there, true?

Gday Ash

Mate If I'm not mistaken there's a campsite just up from the boat ramp. You can't miss it as you head towards the boat ramp, it's across the small road from the kiosk.

Yes, there's a LOT of timber in monduran. I can't quite think of any advice for fishing monduran. Generally speaking, fish the structure, timber, edges of banks drop offs etc.

If I remember anything I've heard about monduran I'll let you know

Although based on what people have told me Awoonga is probably your best bet at that time of the year.

Terrys right there is a camp ground at end of the road (it's the only camp ground) if the water level is up the dirt ramp down from the houses is best, if not the other dirt ramp is imo better than the long steep concrete one as the gravel gets under your tyres and it's like being on ball bearings. We pulled good fish out of the B arm I will get some gps marks if you want a lot of people troll the main basin after dark . We cast lures till our arms fell off and didn;t raise a scale on our first trip then next trip same till we ended up hungover and desided to just have a nice relaxing troll , got 5 fish in about a hour that cures a hang overB)

Good idear the dirt ramps are not that step but sometimes a 4x4 is needed to get to the parking spots. On the camping side Rob and Kelly run the camp ground and are very friendly ,one side is set aside for people with gen sets (hilly and no camp kitchen ha ha) the other side is pretty flat with some powered sites and there is a big camp kitchen with bbqs, toaster, jug ,tables and fridge and if someone tells your mrs that the markets in Gin Gin are good do not believe them a complete waste of fishing time:(

Hey ash, have been to mondurian twice and going back on the 1st Nov. The camp area is great and the amenties are clean and nice hot water for the family. Both powered and unpowered sites. Covered areas with gas BBqs for all to use.

A small shop at the camp sites and the people are very nice.

The only tip I can give you is the water temp plays a big part at Mondurian so the warmer you can find it the better during the day. For this reason the areas close to the banks heat up first and you can often see the barra moving in the weeds. It is very heavily timbered and gets tighter as you go up especially up around 'H' etc. Its a great adventure chasing these monsters. Im taking my 14year son for his first shot at barra so I hope he gets one. I used 30lb braid on my first trip and landed two just under the metre mark but was lucky it wasnt to heavily timbered at that spot. Ive been told if you get one in the heavy timbered area that 50lb is what you need to skull drag them out or you will get cut off on the timber.

Good luck and let us know how you go. Would be interested in GPS points if you have any luck.

Dont forget to drop into tackle shop at Gin Gin on the left heading up, as they specialise in gear for monduran and will give you tips on what spots are firing.

regards

Greery:)

Gold bomers and gold B52s for Monduran. One tip for fishing in heavy timber is fee spool them with a bit of presure on the line most of the time they will go straight out to deep water. We stayed at some cabins in Gin Gin when we went then just drove to the dam. Most of the dam is timber by the way some very hard to get through and stick to the channels we hit a few stumps when we went.

Ash, there is a free camp ground just north of Gin Gin, a large rest area with showers etc. Very well setup. Otherwise camp grounds in Gin Gin or at the Dam. Book ahead for the dam.

Stop in at Foxies in the main street of Gin Gin when you get there, they will fill you in on the current hot spots, including a map! they also have a fantastic lure range at Brisbane prices.

Ray has one of the houses rented for a week at the end of November at the dam, just near the gorge boat ramp.

Check your weekend carefully, they have a big comp on in october, you dont want to be there that weekend (unless you want to compete) or the one straight after!
