Changing Trebles

Angus

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

I know a few people have bought really good quality hooks over ebay to replace the sometimes poor quality hooks that come on some hard bodies.

I was wondering as to any brand names etc that anyone would reccommend?

I have a stack of lures and really the only reason im not using some of them os because of rusty or blunt hooks.

Any info would be mot appreciated.

Cheers.

Angus

Angus don't even think about until you get some of these special plyers. Note the special nose. It is too dangerous to try without them. Make do stuff won't do you. Get the real McKoy otherwise you'll end up putting hooks into your hand or stabbing yourself with whatever you are trying to open split ring with.

Here's another tip - see the big plyers on the right - $5 in Big W and they are a piece of crap. See the lttle plyers on the left $25 from Fishhead and worth every cent. I only use the big ones for extra large split rings and even then I still need to start with the little ones. The point on the nose is too big and makes it hard to get between the rings.

As for hooks when breaming and bassin any half decent will do but if you chasing bigger stuff and at night go the owners.

I've got a tool made by Smith for changing small trebles called a Pincette and it works really well. Way better than normal split ring pliers but it only works on little size 14 trebles. On size 8 or larger it is crap.

can anyone have a list like what size trebles/ rings for sx40, sx48, sx60.......even towadi(spell) and huge trolling lures?

I know from comparing sizes that SX40's have got size 12 Owner Stinger's on them.

What I did was I went to tackle warehouse and picked up a couple of different sizes of hooks. Then I walked over to the Ecogear stand and checked which was the best fit. Size 12 was what I picked and they are perfect.

Brian, those Jarvis Walkers are hit and miss, if you check carefully through the pile in the shop, it is easy enough to pick out the good ones where the tip is well sized, but not weak, and not bent. Once you get a good one they are great. Its like cheap potato peelers, half of them are no good, but when you get a good one they work for ever!
