I used to love 4WDing and my old hilux that I used to have was great. She was an 83 model duel cab lux. Now babies have taken over and my only hobbie is fishing so the lux made way for a baby friendly car (read hyundai accent:blush: ) But here is a pic of what I did to it one day in the bush when I tried something a bit too extreme. I'll use a bit of space for my rig, she was my pride and joy back in the 80's

FC Holden

Holden 202, Yella Terra head, XU1 grind cam.

Hilux campervan 5:1 diff, (CIG locker of course)

HR holden 3 speed box (Only ever used top gear, no other holden box I could get my hands on would hold together behind the motor).

Left front wheel suspension welded solid, left front wheel fill with water. (Kept the left front down on the oval track!, highly illegal of course, but who cared in western Queensland!) Holden Diff yoke welded into Hilux diff yoke to allow tailshaft to fit. (Did that to get it on the track for the first race, it lasted five years and was still going strong when I sold her)

6inch diameter roll cage, 3/8 steel plate in drivers door, under seat and overhead. 2inch steel through rest of body (see where radiator normally sits in photo - that white stuff is 50mm pipe!) Also 36square inches 1/2 steel plate under each roll cage floor mount (not ballast, just safety concious!)

2 radiators mounted in where rear seat normally goes.

70 kilo forklift deep cycle battery mounted next to left rear wheel in boot (ballast?, no thats not allowed!)

I fed it with tripple strombergs.

Right front wheel cross ply tyre to give better \"dig in\" in dirt. (vertical sides, not like radials with smooth edges).

rear wheels 265x14 Traffic Accidents on 14 x 8 rims, picked up off local hoons second hand, grooved for each race day then discarded.

Front brakes only. (You dont want to know what happened when you connected the hiace 9inch drums up on the back, considering the pissy little FC drums on the front. best circle work I ever did)

She used 1 gallon of fuel (Avgas) for 7 x 1/4 mile laps

One year I tried running a wade supercharger I scrounged off an old truck. I used to rebuild the motor after most race days that year (I needed a bulk deal on head gaskets and No 2 pistons), No one ever beat me to the first corner, but that was generally about as far as she got. 10 to 1 compression did not mix well with a supercharger for some reason!

Yeah that is me in the gray king gee fire suite, circa 1988. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/Andrew___Barcaldine_Track_1989.jpg

damn WayneD that first hilux pic is messy.. i mean.. a maroon pinstripe? How much did it set you back to rebuild her?

Feral - that is one mean looking fc, curious about how you filled the tyre with water though? it brought back memories of my old holden :(

..here is (read 'was') my HJ Styleside 253 pride and joy, before I decided this uni thing was a good idea and left work to study only to realise i couldn't afford to eat and run a 30+ year old v8.. [img size=400]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/hj.jpg

Old farmers trick. Put a hand pump in a bucket of water and pump slowly.once it is pretty much full, add the air on top to pressurise.

  • 7 months later...

here is my beasty having a locker in the front she likes to eat tie rod ends after the fact, example a few weeks back after a hard night playin in the rain id planed to go fishing so i backed her out of the garage( Not locked in of course) to hook the boat up, halfway onto the road and BANG drivers side tie rod end snapped clean in half from stess. Had to get out and kick the wheel around straight about 20 times just to get off the road. After a few choice words and a phone call to my decky the fishing was of and i became the grease monkey for the arv. And on the opposite end of the 4x4 scale is my car.

No chance is my car going to tow anything, go further than 1M on sand or show any sort of articulation jumping boulders.

But.... it will scream at you from 6krpm all through to 9krpm. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/03102007295_AFO.jpg
