How Many Species?

Talking about fishing shows whilst out the otehr night got us thinking (inspired by Marks Bergs Fishing Addiction where anglers win a big prize if they catch 15 different species of fish).

How many species of fish are in the Brisbane River?

The list we came up with so far:

1. Bream

2. Flathead

3. Whiting

4. Threadfin Salmon

5. Cod

6. Snapper

7. Bullsharks

8. Fingermark

9. Grunter

10. Jewfish

11. Luderick

12. Happy Moments (not sure of the official name)

13. Garfish

14. Mullet

15. Herring

That will do for a starter what else have you seen or caught?

There's fingermark in the Brisbane river!!?? Or are you talking about moses perch?

Have seen one caught and reported but thats all. It was a solid fish at about 60cm from memory (ill look for the report pretty sure it was a Franco report).

With all the other typical northern species turning up though its not that surprising.

Australian Lungfish
- surprised to see it in the non indigenous list. Where's it native to ?

Lungfish native to Burnett River possibly the Mary some debate over ,this some genetic studies were done, translocated to Brisbane, Pine and some other rivers in the late 1800's

Another ifsh I caught once in a cast net at Oxley Ck was those sucker fish (Black and white stripe) with the mouth on top of their head for cleaning sharks.

They exist in the river and I am guessing they live here as much as the Bullies do, you just wont hook many because they do not take bait ;) .

cheers

Dan

i got one on bait off the sunny coast ;)
