Beacon Fishing

Has anyone been fishing the beacons west of Moreton recently. I went out the other weekend and using liveys, I was getting consistently bitten off through 80lb tough trace. Happened about 15 times before we got to angry and gave up. Someone suggested they were big spanish mackrel and some say sharks? Anyone been out there recently?

No - not recently but your guess sounds right with the Macks. Did you get a short shape run then snapo or was there head shakes and stuff?

I ask because same was happening to me about this time last year at the inner beacon and I could figure it out but have since been told Spanish Macks and my gear was too light.

Most of the time the livey would go nuts for a few seconds then you would just get a little twang and that was it. No head shaking or anything. And the line cuts were very clen, ie. no abrasions or anything, just straght through in one bite. ???

be mackerel, even the qld school mac will hit a livy which is the main customer there. the thing to do is run some 18 lb single strand about 15cm and the tinniest swivel, you land most of em then.

ahhhhhhhhhh! Do you have to use plastic coated? Cause i have heard that some fish (like sharks apparently) don't bite on wire?

no you def dont need coated, single strand is never coated anyway. coated tends to need crimps as well, u could use the melt join but i wouldnt. the idea is its like hair the fish really dont see it.
