Hey guys,

hitting fiji for a week in August, can anyone recommend a half decent travel rod that wont cost a bomb! want it for chucking bream lures etc. or has anyone taking a one piece rod with them and knows roughly the price of doing so. Will be booked on a charter for one day and then want to bring some of my gear for sneaking away and getting a fish on when the mrs isnt looking

One piece with virgin blue forget it.I do not know for ather carriers.

I would be very reluctant to take a one piece even in a rod tube. I would be looking ay a travel rod that breaks down into small sections that you can take in your normal luggage.I picked up a beautiful 4 piece daiwa heartland from the site for a very reasonable price.

It is a 6 ft spin ultra light 2 to 4 lb 1/16 to 3/8 lure my best fish on it is a 50odd cm yella.

Johnny Accaluds also solld one recently. Try putting up a post in the WTB sections of QFM and Breammaster and see what bobs up.

Cheers

Ray

i took 4 rods, in a tube, i have a tube you can borrow. dont remember what it cost, but wasnt much.

if ya can get ya hands on a kayak over there, (resorts will have em) take ya flick stick and fish the rocky headlands. take flickbaits in evil minnow! the gts loved em! no massive ones but round the 1-3 kg mark most of em were. saw much bigger ones but i was pulling the lures away from them as i was only using 4kg line!

depending where yas gunna be, soft plastics will slay em. where i was i dont reckon they had seen one yet! ask the locals.."bula! sanga? (san-ga)" thats means trev ;)

i had crowds of locals watching me at some stages and they were more than happy to take the fish of ya hands.

The best thing to do is ask the staff around the resort and take pictures with you as they have different names for their fish. There is alot of GT's there and they are alot of fun. I took a 2 piece rod over there and a high speed threadline. But they will take anything from raiders to poppers. There are plenty of other fish but it also depends where you are staying. I stayed on the Coral Coast at the Naviti and it had a creek running from the ocean around the side of the resort. I had a ball over there fishing and was back to have breakfast with the family by 7am. I would have loved to have a camera to take a pic of my wifes face when she saw the rod tube come out of the boot of the car at the airport.... She was "WHAT THE".

Anyway i hope you have a great time.cheers

Also take any old hooks, swivels etc. and if your wife knows anyone with big boobs that has any old bra's... take them too.

There is no shopping over there. I went into a second hand clothing shop and an old Grace Bros. removals shirt was $20.00. The guy who took me out on his boat had never seen lure fishing or Polaroid sunglasses and thought they were magic....lol

AFO member Dansike has travelled to Fiji

On awesome fishing trips a few times now.

I guess he may be a good place to start.

I am sure he takes his own fishing gear.

check out his last trip, it was cracker!:cheer:

I have taken my 2 piece shimano t curve 15 to 24kg bluewater spin to Fiji 10 times. I put it in a long solid rod bag. It's never been a problem, even on the flight on the small plane to Savusavu. If you're thinking of taking your bream gear to fiji..think again. I cant land fish there on my "thready" gear. And thats a straddic and 30lb braid. When I fish in Fiji I go HEAVY!! 18000 stella, 90lb braid, 150lb mono leader. Big sharp hooks and oversized hardware!! Thats my tip.

Me and my mate went over 2 years ago. We went to BCF bought over 400$ worth of lures and plastics. Then we went to Castaway Island buzzing with excitement and ready to fish. When we got there we were told that you can't fish around the islands as it is a protected zone :(. But we still went out on a charter to the reefs and picked up Bluefin trevally, cod and some small tuna. On the way back to the island a tuna school was going crazy and being smacked by sharks. We asked the guide to stop so we could flick and it hit us again. YOU CANT FISH AROUND THE ISLAND. Although we were disappointed with the fishing the snorkelling and the rest of the trip was amazing.

The year before the same mate went on a charter for the day to the continential shelf. They caught about 15 Yellow Fined Tuna each over 20kg and he caught a 450 pound Blue Marlin. He said that was the best fishing of his life but just for the day he had to fork out $10 000. Lucky he had his loaded family friends with him. :P
