Awoonga - 2007

Yeah Kriso, here is one ripped off from the ebay add.

I also have a 3000 series I use for Barra as well I got from Ebay, been doing duty since January? Caught a couple of Barra on it, a heap of Bass, and she is a great reel.

Wanted a baitrunner for trolling at Awoonga, so figured I might as well go up a size, no use having a creel full of the same size reels!

I've also got a 2000 series ebay reel loaded with 6lb braid, and a 6000 series baitrunner loaded with 35lb mono for the classic this year!

Kriso, FYI this is Ferg catching the Barra above on a little diawa 2-4kilo with a shimano baitcaser.

Ferg never got anymore strain on the rod than that.

Had to follow him around the dam for a while until he wore out, but was never in danger of losing him! [img size=375]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/Ferg_playing_barra.jpg

If Ray would just get out of the way, all the people who havn't been to Awoonga before could see how big the place is. That's the shore line behind him in the distance.

Thanks Feral for the photos. This year I hope I have a camera that works.

Update - Due to work committments Kriso has to pull out.

$160 per night for both cabins plus $18 per every other person. So if there are 7 people we pay for 5 x $18 plus $160.

Here's a few other scenarios.

7 People $35.71 per night

6 people $38.67 per night

8 people $33.50 per night

9 people $30.00 per night

Persons Confirmed

Brian D

Feral & Alex (NC as long as he doesn't stick the gaff in me)

Ferg

Ray

Graham

Jamie (Polphonic)

Scott

Here is the contact for Lake Awoonga Caravan and Camping Ground (07) 4975 0155 if anyone wants it. They have permanent tents already erected, cabins, camping areas and caravan sites. If anyone wants to borrow a tent, it can be arranged; however the permanent tents are pretty good and cheap. Don't leave it too long as the place books out early.

I'll be paying the deposit next month.

Dropped into Awoonga for a looksee on Tuesday. Dam is down a bit, the water is at the base of the ramp, withabout a 150mm drop off the end of the ramp, with about 1 to 1.5m of gravel off the end then it looks very soft. Can see in the water where the blokes launching the big boats are getting their trailer tyres well down in the mud.

The white in the second photo is the mud after the gravel.

It should still be usable without any drama's, but I reckon the cannonball is a wise choice Brian, I would not fancy sinking a trailer deep, then pulling it up that lip on to the ramp with a big glass boat on it. (Although your new 4wd would probably do it ok!)

Here is a photo across the dam just to get you going!

Just checked my uni timetable.

At the moment, I think I could make: go up the Tuesday night (23rd) and come back Friday/Friday night.

As I mentioned early on in this thread, if that's the case I'd only want a tent. What's the chances of the camp grounds being booked out and not getting a small 1 dome tent in?

Terry,

You would get into one of the grounds with a tent with no notice no worries. The one we stayed in at Benaraby last year has about 20 acres on the river for unpowered sites, last year there was about 10 campsites on it. (Its about 10 minutes further away from the dam)

Where we are staying does not have camping, only cabins. At the dam there are camp grounds, but the new manager is supposed to be as bad as the old.

Thanks Feral. I can't think of any things that would prevent me from coming.

I don't remember it being mentioned, how many spots do the cabins have? I'm keen to hook up to a 1.3m barra in my yak :woohoo: I'll just wave to everyone as I go past. I just hope I don't get towed into the sticks

Lee: Would be good if you could come mate

Hey this is good news about the yaks.

Let me say firstly that any who come are welcome and we'll fit them in.

Having said that If I was a yak with a dome tent and in my 20's I would stay at the caravan park on the headland.

I know it's had bad press but if you don't cause a problem you wont have a problem. The yaks can launch from the kiosk at the park and timber is not that far away.

If you are only going for 3 days it's a long way, maybe Lenthalls is better for yaks and 3 days. It's about 2 hours closer, it has barra and very suitable for yaks.

Don't get me wrong - I am not trying to put you off but Lenthalls is worth a consideration.

Terry if you are deadset on Awoonga you won't be disappointed. Just understand that the place we stay does not allow tents, but you can crash in one of our cabins no worries.

If you want your own space for a tent there are several options.

That goes for you to Lee.

I'd love to crash in one of the cabins if there's room. And yes, I'm deadset on Awoonga ! :woohoo:

The thought of a 1.3m barra on the end of my rod when I'm in a kayak is something I can't pass up :woohoo:

Edit: Brian: when are you heading up mate? I'm thinking about even heading up on the Monday morning!

LOL

If you saw the crap I take shark fishing, you'd see that last picture as being true.

I think I'll try and pack light for this Awoonga trip!

Edit: Brian, Feral etc what sort of gear do you take?

I will take my normal bass/bream setup, a tuna outfit, and possible my TLD 25 (with 60lb mono).

I'm considering getting a calcutta (dunno what size) and maybe putting it on a shimano raider barra impoundment rod. Open to suggestions on a specialist barra rod though.

As for the lures. I'll be definitely looking at some of those Hyper Vipers and some of the other Vipers. I might get some of the X models for midnight barra hunting (I'm currently in love with Predatek and their lures)

I'll be heading up on the Friday (19/10) and going to stay at Gin Gin for the weekend and fish Moduran.

Then either Sunday or Monday head to Awooonga, that will depend on the fishing at Moduran. What do they say \"never leave fish to find fish\".

Someone is welcome to join me if they don't mind the no plans approach. Gin Gin pub is about $60 a night I think, or if I have to I will sleep at the dam in the car. There is room in the boat to roll out a swag is worst comes to worst.

Feral, Alex and Ferg are heading to Gin Gin Sunday I think.

I tried to get a cabin at Moduran but they are booked until Dec.

As I say

Well I've ordered some deep divers, a couple of Hyper vipers, and a boomerang 80UD, with my paravine should take care of anything down deep!

moorder.jpg

Gear Terry, dunno, I am certainly not an expert. Ferg got is 1m plus on a 4 kilo diawa rod and 25 year old Garfish style lure last time!

I am taking 2 heavy setups, with big bait runners (50lb braid, 10 and 15 kilo rods) for the trolling, but will be using probably medium rods for lure casting (4 to 8kilo, and 3 to 6 kilo)with 3000 series spinning reel and the DAM baitcaster real I got off Dennis.

Alex will be using an 8kilo rod with 20lb mono (He does not cast lures as yet, maybe this trip!) Probably a couple of ultra light rods because I can fit them in as well!

Hey I booked a Powered site at the Moduran Caravan Park for the Frid Sat and Sun, so if anyone wants to drop in feel free.

Terry ask Augus what happens to his bream/bass outfit at Lenthalls. Awoonga will be worse.

I'll be taking 3 Diawa bait casters with 30, 40 and 60lb braid on them for flicking and trolling. The black sheep has the 60lb on it. I will also take my Shamino Tekoda reel with 50lb mono.

I'll be using braided fluro leaders to 120lb, meaning 30lb twisted and doubled, as well as some straight 60lb fluro crabon.

Further I am going to upgrade all the hooks and split rings. I might not upgrade the vipers just to test Schultzy out.:P

My lure range are Barra Classic, Vipers and some Repala Xraps, along with some huge plastic and poppers.

Not that I am a tackle freak
