OK, This is my eldest son's new ride. 1988 daihatsu charade. 1.3l DOHC 70hp in a 700kilo body - goes like stink!

This is the first race day after we got it, as he was still to young to race it, (does not turn 12 until May, when he can get his first CAMS licence) Dad had to show him the ropes!

Do you need a rollcage to race in your rally's? I've got an 81' subaru that I used to 4wd in, but haven't done much of that lately, would be cool to run it around a rally track or two for some fun.

No no roll cage. The only thing you need is if the car is registered, to get a 3rd party extension from your reg insurer. Some give it free, others charge $10. If its not registered, you just need ot get it there! (Some also mysteriously lose their number plates for a few hours ;) )

They are having a motorkhana next weekend up near Cooroy if your interested. Costs a little bit to get set up, as yuou have to join the club ($30) and pay for a cams licence ($50 for the day, or $50 for the year if you fill out the paperwork, you think they might want you to have a year licence?) Might be worth your while going for a look and talking to a few people.

Not quite as clear cut as not needing registration.

So is it a motorbike, is it a motor scooter, is is a moped, is it a powered recreational device, is it a wheeled recreational device? We are still seeking legal advice on it, so what hope do the public have?

I have some notes at work which will clear it up I hope, but bottom line that I can shoot off now is helmet a must when on road, does 50+ then must be registered.....

Most legislation goes on kilowatt output and not CC capacity when it comes to this stuff, so Feral if you know how to convert then jump onboard.

Apart from that I will get back to you when I know....

Booty, no direct calc from CC's to kilowatts, can vary vastly. But a performance engine will give about 1hp per cubic inch (about 16cc) -any higher and the engine life is proportionally shortened, EG a BDA Escort 2 litre motor putting out 1100 horse power was good for about 20 hours. The lower performance 300HP one was good for a whole year.

a standard engine gives about 1/3 to half that. 2 stroke a little better, maybe 2/3 to 3/4. I'd reckon about 1 kilowatt per 20cc would be in the ball park

Usually gearing for revs it can do under load will set your max speed.

Dunno shortie, some require licences, but only a car licence, some require a bike licence some none at all.

Its not an area I'd like to be caught in.

Remember those small versions of motorbikes that came out a year or two ago? QT refused to allow them to be registered, so they have pretty much disappeared now, but I remember seeing a young fella driving one from Caboolture to Bribie in peak hour traffic. Cars were going everywhere trying to get around him.
