Got to the island late friday but there was alot of Bfo members already set up so i had a couple of beers then hit the bed for an early start fishing in the morning. We set off saturday before dawn and had 6 boats from afo heading for the mermaid reef to chase mackerel. The livies went off in my boat for the morning but we could only land the 1 spanish amckerel out of 8 strikes on the yakkas.Brads boat got 1 spotty but bri the pom got the most out of the fleet with 1 spanish and 4 spotties

Kicked back after fishing around the camp with a few coldies while the kids fished and swam out the front

yep another awsome weekend had with the crew, was good to see/meet some new faces on the scene.

a thanks to kelvin (kmcrosby) who was a good deckie to me for the weekend and all others that helped cheers. Those who dont know, i busted my shoulder at work last week,so it was good to have a hand on the boat cheers. ;)

missed some good strikes on sat.eventually hooked up and a good fight was had till the the shoulder gave in and i droped the rod lost the fish now the shoulder clicks every time i move it haha what ya do for a fish. midmorning we headed off from the mermaid and headed north out wide up towards the pin to some good grounds to hopefully break the dreded donut to some reefes.I thought maybe we might be lucky and pick a few tuskies up ,wouldnt wana target those snapper so we targeted the tuskies  :P but all kelvin and I could get was snapper and bloody trag jew :lol: all snaps and traglin were released just fine sorry no pics put up ;) we did take a few piccys but. so that avoided the donut for the day.

Back to camp for an ale and later on we all had a good feed of prawns fresh off the trawler at the co op. and heaps of claw thanks to the crazyman and cheers dassa for cookin em up.

and young fella i never relised you were such a guru on the guitar you and danny played great music on sat. night that was awsome. Just name a song and these boys played it with pasion B) like i mean any song they could play it and play it loud they did. you better bring that guitar to borumba boy.;)

sunday morning saw all boats leaving together to head back down to the mermaid.

With kelvin and bri taking the deckie spots we were sucesfull in a triple hook up.It was mayhem on the deck, there were lines crossed there was the first mac going 75cm that got boated snaping at the feet whilst still getting un tangled whilst trying to gaff the second mac which was bigger agian still trying to cut all the tangle line/wire free and the third was boated nice work lads it all hapened so fast. then a quick check of the fish from the lovely ladies from the water patrol rib and then back to camp by 10:30 for a clean up pack up and off home.

sweet weekend boys (and girls), thanks for the hospitality. the trip highlighted a few firsts for tina and myself, first time out the seaway, first time roughing it and tina's first tuna in a massive bust up. we were unlucky on the mackerel front with 3 rods going off at once on the first day, i set the hooks on the big rod and passed it off to tina only to have it snip through the wire moments later. to avoid a donut we chased a big school of tuna around for about 30 minutes with multiple hook ups on slugs, good fun on the lighter gear and to take her mind off the swell.

back to the island and was just great kicking back, the whole time i had cravings for beer but kept to a strict plan to avoid feeling green the next day. ted supplied and dassa cooked up a mean feed of claw - cheers!

sunday morning saw us head out again and the trip down was great. i think we were the first to hook up, had the spotty at the boat ready for the gaff before one last run busting me off. i think all the boys could hear me swear it was that loud. we also had one trace come back with the wire snipped without even a run. nothing for the rest of the day but saw tug's boat get onto a few then all hell broke loose on mick's boat boating 3 in a span of 5-10 minutes... the wind/swell made baiting a bit difficult but nonetheless a nice day to be out. trip home was a little lumpy but got there in the end.

cheers for the company we'll be at the next one for sure!

mackerel 5 - eug/tina 0

Well I had a really good time at Wavebreak on the weekend. I was so glad I got my spotty before I got too sick and ended up on the floor of the boat vomiting. I also got a small trevally, most probably wouldn't count in most peoples books but I was glad as it was the first one I had ever caught.

Can't wait for the next wanderers trip.

Would it be worth going there on the easter holidays or would it be better to go somewhere different?

Hey all - yep, just an unbelievably great weekend. My first one and I'll definitely be back for more (starting with Borumba hopefully). I tend to waffle on so I'll try and make this short. Got there Fri arvo, forgot to double check exactly where we were camping so unsuccessfully tried to befriend one group (glad they dis-owned me as they weren't the friendliest bunch!!!!) so was glad to see the REAL AFO bunch were alot nicer. Met the crew, settled in for a few coldies and then heard via Youngfella that Mick Fillet had a spare deckie spot - YES PLEASE as saved me taking my 14ft and chance to see the experts in action.

Met Mick the next morning (3:30am) and off we go, our group is the first to Mermaid. Set up in an arc formation and get our lines floating out, then see first hand how disrespectful some people can be - W%$&er pulls up 10m from where Tugger's and other floats were located. Unfortunately Tuggers sustained abuse was unsuccesful in moving them on.

Mick and I didn't have much luck - Mick had a couple of good runs (first one 'woke' his sore shoulder up - poor bugger had to lift his rod up over the others as the mack ran from right to left - I was quite keen to continue the fight for him but there is no stopping Mick!!!!) and a few hits on livies just behind the hook. Had a good view of Tuggers boat though and couldn't believe his/their bad luck with many quality runs not resulting in fish. Goes to show even the experts have to work for their fish. As Mick said we then did some bottom bouncing and caught all the species you can't keep, then I got a double hook-up of BIG grinner and scorpion cod, followed by another BIG grinner - a sign it was time to head back, socialise and have a cold one.

As stated by others the redclaw were awesome - thanks Ted and Dassa. The prawns Mick and Davo got were great also. Forgot to have dinner for the second straight night (very unlike me as I love my food but time just flew whilst chatting/talking S#@t and having a few brews & bourbons. Started falling asleep in the camp chair so time for bed - managed to wake up on time for the second straight morning without an alarm clock but the head but worse than expected. Oh oh!!!!

Bri and I jumped aboard MV Melmick V MV and had to wake the skipper up - think he was in the middle of a pretty good sleep (sorry Mick but the fish were waiting!!!!). Thankfully I felt alot better once we set off (strangely enough) and was keen to get amongst them. No luck with the livies at first and Mick was having a hell of a time getting the balloons to get away from the boat for a fair while. Jolly current kept moving our baits all over the place and Mick wasn't impressed - I kept telling him his day was going to get better. Eventually it did, seconds after I said I was hopping in under the shade I hear that long awaited zzzzzzzzzz - Mick informs me it is my rod (you little beauty!!!!) and then it becomes apparent that the fish is peeling off past the front of the boat and has caught a couple of others lines. Mick orders me to get up on the nose so jump up on the side rails (almost falling in - luckily grabbed with one finger from my left hand as it had the rod in it). Got the fish near the boat but felt like a nob sitting on the nose and had to try and direct it back to Mick who was waiting with the gaff. Got him (YEEHAAAA!!!!!), rejoin them on the deck, then realise amongst the lines everywhere that Bri is on. He brings his in - a bit bigger than mine - so within 2 minutes there are two decent spotties on the boat. Relax for about 30 seconds, then Mick's line goes beserk out the back. My line and trace is wrapped around Micks line, frantically manage to cut my line but don't notice my wire trace wrapped around Micks line - luckily he brings it in and Bri successfully gaffs it via Micks precise instructions. So ....... 3 fish onboard which is kinda cool (one each). Mine is 71cm, Bri's I'm guessing high 70's and Mick's is a horse at 93cm (which he correctly predicted to the centimetre!!!!). Immediately had a visit from the Water Police girls to check the sizes (they reckon someone said check us out as we might be keeping undersized mackeral - what nonsense!!).

Decide to quite while we're ahead and head back to help everyone pack up. Absolutely magic weekend. Was great to meet everyone. I learnt SO MUCH off Mick - both fishing tips/strategies but also ideas for equipment on the boat (loved your story about improvising by drilling holes in river rocks to use for sinkers in deep water Mick - you are indeed resourceful and innovative). Thanks for having me as a deckie both days - hope I didn't talk your ear off/ask TOO many questions!!!!!!!! Thanks also to Bri for giving me tips on the way back in the Seaway for catching Jewies and flatties - will have to get down one weekend to fish with you and give em a crack. Thanks also Bri for showing us your boat modifications - seat esky (think I'll give it a crack), burley pot and storage under floorboards - all great ideas.

Slept like a baby last night, was jolly tired at work today but won't forget this trip in a long time. Thanks again everyone who made it a magic weekend.

Kelvin.

good stuff dave (i don't think he's on the forums, bri?). good bloke though think he was with you down at currumbin last time?

with tina feeling a little crook out at mermaid we opted to chase the tuna to take her mind off the swell before heading back to camp... landed about 5 or 6 and handled them like a pro.
