I am going to Gove in three weeks and I am trying to get a good rod for the GT popping. I have read a fair bit about the Shimano TCurve Bluewater Spin Fishing Rod 15-24kg and it is highly recommended for this. I am also looking for a good durable second hand 10,000 to 18,000 reel with about 20kg of drag and 250 metre spool. If anybody has the rod gathering dust let me know. Thanks Ted

Hey Ted,

The bluewater tcurve 15-24kg won't work a popper, not well anyway. The one you are thinking of is the tcurve GT special. Around $400. From what I have heard and read it is a pretty decent popping rod but becomes a bit of a pig if you are planning on casting it all day long. Its pretty heavy.

The daiwa saltiga s-extreme is probably a bit nicer but is around $650. When I was there with Gus and Henry, Fishhead had them for $500 on special. Not sure if this is still the case.

Henry and I ended up getting FCL Labo rods up towards $800 but so much lighter and nicer. Problem with popping is the gear is very specialised and none of it is cheap. It gets even worse when you find out that popping rods are only really good at casting and working poppers and not much else.

If you want to have a look at my FCL Labo, you can drop by sometime this week.

Have a look at the Okuma Salina II reels on ebay. The 1600 has 20kg of drag and is tops for the price. You can get them for around $180.00 compared to $300 plus in stores. For jigging and popping they are great and excellent value for money. ;) Very strong and reliable. Ihave the salina in 4000, 5000 and 8000 sizes. I've had them for about a year and they have been used extensively and caught some whopping fish.

Thanks Dom - $800 for a rod is probably a little out of my budget for a rod that will only be used once each couple of years. Thanks for the advice on the rods. I will have a look at the Saltiga as well. What line rating did you get? I might drop in and have a look at it Dom. Will see how time goes.

Thanks Carter - I have been looking at these reels. I have not heard anybody's experience with them. It is good to hear they perform well. At $180 they look great value.

PE8 same as the saltiga rod. Most popping rods are around this unless you start getting super hardcore.

Thanks Guys. I am really happy with the purchase although I went white when i confirmed the purchase as Dassa can attest to.

Agree Henry - i have already taken the real out to have a look at it a couple of times.

i do not really have ceiling fans but split system fans can do a job on a tip of a Rod as I have experienced.

Sweet rod can not wait to get a fish on it.
