Identification - mullet what type & Blubberlip Bream?

Identifying juvenile mullet is really difficult. In Qld, only two species are regulated (ie have a size limit). They are sea mullet and diamond scale mullet, and the size limit is 30cm.

this looks like a flicker mullet to me - Paramugil georgii. They do not have a minimum size but do have an in possession limit of 20.

they make excellent live bait and the bigger ones are quite tasty.

for those who have Grants Guide to Fishes, the mullet section has great pictures to help with ID

You know it!, I was rocking a beast of a mullet at school, strange times in the 80’s

My friends dared me to get a mullet with my big boof. I was going to but then we saw the outrageous price so decided to go. Lol. Too late now, I’d have a term of detentions if I rocked one to school 😉

Kat, it’s a Blackall/Blubberlip Bream, and the other looks like a Sea Mullet to me. I’d say Andrew is on the money though.

Kat asked me to put up some photos from Grant's.

These are actually from Grant's Fishes Of Australia, not Grant's Guide to Fishes. I think they are reasonably similar. Some of the names are different to how I know them.

Hope it helps.

Personally I love Mullet. They are easy to fillet and even the smaller versions give you plenty of meat per fish.
