Is this a brown sweetlips? I can't find it in QLD DAF web site.

What's the legal size of it? Thanks for help.

I would say yes with that that dark bar on the front of the Gill cover and the dark bar on the rear of the grill cover.

yes, brown sweetlips, brown morwong, blubber lip any or all of those are correct.

legal size would fall under the "sweetlips" category - 25cm min size and bag limit of 5 per species.

they are ok eating, must be bled very well on capture and iced.

According to ChatGPT, it states that "For brown sweetlips specifically, the Fisheries Regulation 2019 states that it is a "no-take" species. This means that recreational fishers are not permitted to take, possess or sell brown sweetlips in Queensland, regardless of size or quantity.", but I cannot find the regulation. What do you guys think about this?

I think that the general public would be obliged to adhere to regulations that are published by "Fisheries Queensland" and are readily available on their platform. 

@Andrew_P may be able to confirm.

I would go by the fisheries website over one of Elon Musk's experiments personally.

I would not take one to eat the flesh looks like Mac tuna. They are fun to catch cos they go like stink but they also stink like stink. I think @Kat caught a big one a couple of years back on a yabby?

You are right I did - my best catch so far on a No. 10 garfish hook (had runout of whiting hooks) and smallest yabby in my bucket.  Anyway caught a few more since then and before - I have eaten them all and they don't stink and they are better eating than Bream or Tailor - in my honest opinion

There is a couple similar looking fish, Sombre Sweetlip and Painted Sweetlip.

I personally haven’t eaten any of them so I can’t comment but maybe one is better eating than the other.

I’ve eaten a whole bunch of awful things in my time (including Mac tuna) and I wouldn’t eat one of them. You are superhuman @Kat !
