queensland yeppoon whitSundays fishing

Hey guys, hooking the boat up from Sydney and will be heading up north for a couple weeks in september.

 

The plan is to head straight up to Yeppoon and do a week or so of day-trips out around the keepple islands and surrounding reefs.

 

Then head up to the Whitsundays where ive got a week booked at Hamilton island marina and hopefully a week of boat camping out around the great barrier reef if the weather permits.

 

Just wondering if you guys have any advice for things like charts, boat ramp info, must see spots, maybe some starter marks or just a general point in the right direction. Ive never had the boat this far north and really keen to get into some reef fish, pelagics and do a bit of snorkeling ect.

Your trailers look good Luke.

A few tips from me:

• Navionics is a great resource for new areas. Nothing beats going to a new area and working it out for yourself
• Try searching this forum - most of the topics are SE Qld specific but there are a few of us further north that have posted trip reports from Yeppoon and Airlie Beach areas. Having fished both these areas myself i can tell you that you still have to work hard for your fish. Weather and sharks can be a problem.
• There are a load of youtubers based around the Whitsundays - try contacting them for a few tips.

Hey Luke,

Welcome to the forum. I’m not much help about the Whitsundays but at Yeppoon, the school mackerel have started running around the rocky headlands. Trolling around these headlands could you see catching some nice fish. 

The Fitzroy is also apparently clean at the moment so the prawns and salmon are around.

@Andrew_P and @Junky make very valid observations. I fished Yepoon early June last year for the first time ever. Did Ok. Nothing spectacular really but Navionics was key to having places to investigate rather than just running completely blind.

What is the boat? I wanted to go wider than I did but was not permitted to do so.

There is some fantastic country off Yepoon and I will be going back.

Thanks for the advice, ill download and print off a few of those charts for all the areas ill be in and take note of the zoning.
