New ( Old) dam boat.

I have a uncurable disease called ebayitus.

Out of bed at 3am spot of breaky and off to Ferals place to pick him up at 5am and up to Bundaberg to pick up my latest ebay purchase.

4metre quintrex of unknown vintage on a trailer.

It is a foot longer than my current dam boat and about 6 inches wider so will be a lot more comfortable and stable than my old boat.

It has a side console at the moment and my forst job will be to cut it out and remove all the cable and pulleys from the steering.

I do not think that I will bother installing floorboards as the floor is reasonably flat. I will just use some rubber matting.I now have the job of removing the sounder and batteries etc from my old boat to the new one before the weather fines up.

Here are a few photos of the newie.

As you can see it is one of the old flared bow models so should give a dry ride in the chop. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/P1010863_AFO.jpg

From the stern. Dont know whether I will build up the transom or leave it alone as I have a short shaft 4 stroke 4 hp motor that will suit it.

Will depend how it sits with the batteries in it.

Will post as I modify.

The hull is very sound and the trailer is ok except for the axle and springs which are a bit rusty but serviceable.

Cheers

$500 boat and trailer.

If you remember I put up a post before xmas to see if anyone was interested with bidding starting up at $399 and no one bid on it so the seller relisted it and I decided to have a go and someone else also bid on it so I had to pay $100 extra.

I still reckon it was a bargain at that price. If anyone wants a cheap dam boat I will be selling my old one.It is a 12 ft booker tinney with a good trailer and dolphin aqualiser stabilisers. I will put up some photos when I have it ready.

Cheers

Ray.

Well seeing that the weather is RS I got stuck into it today. Removed the centre seat and the side console. Found one cracked rib that I will have to get mate to weld up. Undecided may reconfigure the removed seat and place it just aft of the front seat and remove front seat but that is something for the future unless the bad weather holds in for a week.

Hera is the stripped hull. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/P1010863_AFO-45baedbdd9ece5dd8f2a3bec17b4f0a5.jpg

The axle is pretty sad so I am going to replace it.

Will also replace the springs with a set of 5 leaf ga;vamosed ones that I had put away in case I ever needed them. ( who said that hoarding never pays off?

The new ( Old ) one is about 6 inches wider than the old one so i will have to remove and remount the mudguards also.

I am too mean to buy an axle the same width as the old one. Rather spend a couple of hours extra work modifying the trailer. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/P1010864_AFO-3348201f5ab2eb4d9114ed1bf58d9de3.jpg

The centre crossmember is badly rusted and the rear one is starting to rust so I will replace both of them whilst I have the trailer dismantled. I am RS at vertical welding so it will be easier to rotate the trailer without the mudguards and axle.

I have also found a couple of cracks in the chassis where the side members have a bend in them so I will reinforce them while I am at it.

The trailer will be carrying quite a bit more weight than it was designed for so I am taking the opportunity to upgrade it while i am working on it. I do not want it to fall to bits going to lenthalls.

Cheers

Well I have got stuck into it over the last few days.

Replaced axle, springs and wheels. The old axle and springs were rusted and the wheels are intergral bearing type which I dont like.

Replaced rear and centre crossmember.

Had to make new mudguards as new wheels are 13 inch so I bent up a bit of checker plate I had.

Just have to give it a coat of paint sometime as it looks a bit poxy with coldgal over all the places that I have welded.

Starting to fit all the bits in the boat now.

Only doing it temporaly as there are 2 cracked ribs in it and mate cant weld it up till late February and I am too lousy to pay someone else to do it.

Cheers

Where did you get all the \"skills\" for the job? I'm a bit scared to look at my old boat and trailer in depth...I don't know what to look for or how to fix it anyway!

Good to see you have kept busy in this crap weather.

You are putting a lot of TLC into the old girl, I'm sure you will be glad to get a fish in it when the weather breaks.

Thanks for the advice Feral.

(Sorry for borrowing your thread Ray:blush: )

The trailer on mine looks pretty good (touch wood), just not sure how it would go on a long road trip (ie up to Barra dams etc). I see so many trailers on the side of the road broken down, don't want to be one!

I know bearings can be an issue, but don't know enough about them to tell if mine need work? They are full size car wheels, not the little tiny trailer wheels you see on some.

I know that the boat takes a little water, but so far nothing serious (where's that wood!?).

It's had more panel beating work than Micheal Jackson's face, and is none to pretty either (like MJ!), but I don't know if I can make it any better.

I'm not quite as brave as Ray when it comes to pulling apart and re-doing, but threads like this are very helpful in giving me ideas on what can be done with a bit of know-how.

Thanks again Ray for the step-by-step, good stuff.

Mate, if wet feet worries you, put in a floor, keep the feet dry. The silver bullet leaks, makes a gallon or two of water over a day, doesn't worry me, got a floor to keep the feet dry and bilge pump in it which I run occasionally. Have a look up my thread on Trailer bearing maintenance, or let me know a week day you have off, I have to do some training at work for my certification, and I was thinking of doing wheel bearing maintenance training at work - could make it on your week day off and you could come along. (Got a couple of blokes who know nothing about it, and we use trailers under some shocking conditions)

Wet feet not a problem, it does have a floor (of sorts) that does the job.

I'll check that thread and give the wheels a once over before I take on any long trips.

I'm lucky enough to be Mon-Fri, 9-5, so I might not be able to enrol in \"bearings for trailer 101\"!

If I've got questions as I go, it's good to have all the collective AFO brains to tap.

I have been pottering away at it in between fishing trips. First job was to attach stickers. This side is the clean side it has years of ingrained grime on it have been scrubbing it with a scotchbrite and truck wash to clean it.[img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/P1010867_AFO-764020cc8142b4594e6359414c831eab.jpg

The bow one they are all mounted on removable swivel bases that I had been given years ago. I had to make wooden inserts that I screwed into the aluminium seats to stop the seats tilting when you move around. Had to fabricate a bracket to mount the sounder on. At present the sounder is fixed . I do have a swivel mount in the shed somewhere but so far I can only find half of it.

Have also installed rod mounts. I am not wirrying about floorboards.

I have just cut up som old conveyor belting and inserted it between the floor ribs and it is quite effective.

The floor is fairly flat and i will probably leave the matting. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/P1010869_AFO-6b9811c69afa3d438258c8f043da9c32.jpg

Made up a small floor in the bow to support two 180ah 6 volt batteries. There is room for the batteries and the life jackets there and I have made a bit of ply to go on top of the batteries and form a casting deck. Attached the bow mount. Took a bit finangleing to cope with the curve if the bow and ensure that two of the bolts went through a cross member under the bow. The other two bolt holes are reinforced by a couple of 1/4 inch aluminium plate under the bow. Still dont have any lighting fitted so i picked this up at supercheap today. It is a 28 led rechargeable that will run for 4 hours on it internal battery and comes with a 240 volt charger and a 16ft lead that plugs into a cigarette lighter socket. $35 they reckon the light output is equivalent to a 40 w flouro.Bot optomistic but quite good can read and tie knots by it. Oh yeah I see now:blush: I'm thinking mine will need quite a bit of reinforcing to hold my bulk;) . I'm planing on having a couple of lids in mine for a few compartments. It's hard to make up my mind what I'm going to do with my fitout:blink: . While out fishing with Jason we've been throwing a few ideas around.

Thanks for your help guys, I'm enjoying watching your tinny come together.

Promised the missus I would start to clean up the garage and shed today.

Well o started.

Found an old beer drip tray in stainless steel. The a small stainless hinge and a bit of ply.

Here is what i did.

The beer tray has all drain holes in the bottom so I drilled a couple of holes in the side and screwed it ti the rear seat.

It now gives me somewhere to keep small items whilst fishing and also serves a a point to fix occy straps to to stop motor bouncing around during transporting.

I closed up one of the hooks on the strap to stop me losing it as I can never find them when we get ready to go home.[img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/P1010864_AFO-1cae0d66d27306ce49d757f7f6893a62.jpg

Next little job was to make a hinged support bracket for the bow mount. When I am not transporting the motor the bracket lies flat on the bow.

I also closed up one hook on the occy strap so it also doesnt get lost.

Maybe I may clean up a bit more of the garage tomorrow.

Cheers
