berkley vanish. your thoughts?

hey guys, i bought some berkley vanish 61b line for my fishing trip last weekend, I was pretty happy with it and caught alot of fish but i had a problem with it shredding:huh: which resulted in a few break offs. I dont think it was the structure as i never got snagged and my other mates who were just using the cheap mono line had no probs at all.

Is this normal for the line to shred? If so i dont think its worth buying. Has anyone used this line and if so have u had the same problem?

The 300metre berkley vanish line or the 50metre spools of berkley vanish leader? I've never had either shred so dont know whats happened, How does it shred at knots or what?

hey mate was it vanish casting Line or leader? The line comes in a large spool the leader is in a smaller square pack.

If it was vanish casting line than that stuff is ok but isn't given the hard waring coat that the leader material has.

I prefer yamatoyo leader these days anyway.

got the casting line, its weird i'll see if i still have it. just the line itself was shredding and breaking

if u get the leader it will probably be better because of a coating on the outside of it to give it extra abbrasion resistance

also for leaders i use nitlon which imo is good stuff

have you checked all the runner inserts on your rod for chips or cracks

Other than that, I can't see why the line would be shredded:S Might just be a bad batch, I dunno:huh: :S

that's really weird! I have 6lb vanish line on one of my reels and have no problems with it shredding.

i've got 20lb vanish line* used as leader) shredded b4 when fighting fast fish in around some nasty snags. they r usually fine though.

I use Vanish fluro leader in 6lb and can't fault it, it has never failed on me yet. Like Dan when I step up to 8/10/12/14lb I am now using Yamatoyo and it too hasn't let me down

my fire line starts to shed once its old a shitty but being a new lot thats a bit wierd. i use the nitlon leader and love it.

i tried the 6lb ages ago and had the same problem it went white and gutless i switched to platypus no more problem ill check the rod for damadge but i dont think theres any

weird that its shreadding - maybe its a dodgy batch of line or the store you got it from didnt keep it in the right storage conditions. i use the normal vanish as leader sometimes and have never had a problem. i have a few different leaders i use sunline fc is good esp if you order from overseas

Ive used 6lb and 8lb vanish fluro (line) as leader and i can't fault it, is not as tough as the leader material but is still tough and transparent enough.

I am using 4lb vanish line as leader and have found that it 'shreds' as well. It is usually after tying and tensioning a knot that I notice it. Haven't got ANY fish yet (AT ALL) so can't comment on anything else it may or may not do.....

Same goes with Fireline, SPs, SX 40s and TT Switchblades.

My 2 cents anyway.

I used the 6lb for ages on my bass spinning reels, never had that happen. I've gone back to 6lb mono though, as I've used it up, the mono is thinner and cheaper.

BundyBoy - try lubricating the line when tying and tightening your knots.

Just before you tighten them (when its really loose,) give it a bit of saliva

It could be damage from heat caused by the friction when tightening the knots.

Terry, yeah thats what I thought it was too. It has never really been a problem for me, just something I noticed when I was rigging up.
