screw the shark setup... but my favourite luring setup.................................... arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh................................................................

is there any chance of getting the lure rod back at low tide???

;(..........................................

alll my bloody fault.............. should have loosened the drag on the shark setup.......... should NOT have brought a luring rod along sharking at night.......................... arrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Should have a length of 80lb line tied to a crab pot ball float if you fishing off a pontoon and leaving the rod unattended, or tie the 80lb to the pontoon!

Expensive lesson!

You probably wont get it back at low tide, but if you get a grapple or some heavyish line and some biggish trebles, it would be worth going for the lure setup, it might be there, although tidal flow is high.

We lost a shark set up to a big fish last year. Had the 2 live Poddy Mullet dangling off the end of the pontoon just under the surface waiting for the City Cat to finish its last run. When there was a huge surface splash. We had the rod way down the other end of the pontoon. The rod went sliding across the pontoon and hit a bump in the pontoons surface. It sat there stuck on the bump for a couple of seconds as line ripped off then it flicked over the bump and into the drink at a rate of knots.

We caught it back a few mouths later. Lets just say it didn't survive the swim. That was at Brett's Wharf as well, there's loads of current there.

I'd say it was a shark as we were only using mono leader as we had no wire left. The leader had been cut half way up so that explains it.

I dont think even Jordan would go in after a shark rod that had just been dragged off a pontoon! You might actually find it! along with the bitey!

Also it is very common for people who jump in to the city reach of the river not to come back up. There is usually a couple a year that disappear. Sometimes they find the bodies sometimes they dont. (munched I reckon)

There was a bloke who jumped in off a pontoon a couple of years ago after his son who had fallen off the jetty, I dont remember exactly the details, but at least one of them died.

They only make a Jap Domestic Model with the Biomasters. They are the equivelant to a Stradic on the Aus market. You can get them for around $150 AUD from over seas. I recon I could find one on Ebay in around 2mins.

Did Loomis even make an SJR model 7 years back? :S . I thought it was just SR back then? I have an sr-781, it's a 6'6\" 1-3kg. Awesome for light surface fishing.

Bugger about the lose though. How deep was it. Jordan was just saying it was only around 2m deep at mid tide? Even if it was a high tide I would have been straight in after it.

P.S. Are you in the market for a second hand Stella? :P  .

thats a bit extreme :P i have swum in the river many times with no problems. used to always swim in it down around new farm-bretts wharf reaches, done a few across and back swims. only thing i ever heard of from heaps of people been inthe river is one guy got a small infection from an open cut. also had a few dips further up near fig tree pocket a couple of times (though thats a bit scarier cos the water is so murky).

nah, there's a crappy Asian market model as well, quite watered down in terms of specs and gear material etc, and there's also another model called the Technium, just a bearing upgrade on that one.

replacing the reel wouldnt be too difficult as you said, but it's more the sentimental value that means alot more to me, plus the IMX setup was my main setup for most of my snakehead hunting. Alot of fond memories... I cant remember the serial number for the rod- never bothered with it anyway. it's an 8-17. light enough tip, but the backbone is madness. Much much better compared to the current MIC models.

about the stella, you got my pm right? give me a few days to get my head straight over this loss first, then we'll continue dealing. very sorry mate.

anyway, i guess i'll be going for a swim tmr morning.. hope you guys are right. I'd hate to become the first statistic! gonna use my feet to feel around tho, visibility + salt water doesnt make the eyes very useful anymore..

thats really suckful, how about doing an insurance job on it:sick:

when i first started rowing most of it involved falling out and drifting around the river for hours, didnt even know sharks were in there back then.

nah, no insurance. my other half is already on my case for losing em.

Adrian, i agre with Johnny, (Sorry feral :P). I have swum in the river numerous time no worries.

The only bodies i can confirm in the river are from suicides, gangland killings and a boat crash.

Anyway i still think its a long shot. In front of that pontoon its deep.

Sorry to hear about your loss though. Want to go over the specialised tackle shop during the week?

shit only just got online and read this thread, if anyone ever needs it again i have a good grappeling hook

used it for lifting large fish up urangan pier. glad you got at least one of them back, why are you calling the reel a right off surely it can be stripped and serviced, replace drag washers etc, have done this many times with reels that have taken a swim.

very lucky with the rod actually, managed to snag the line on my 2nd try... extremely lucky it didnt get past the drop-off, it was probably 2ft from it! no telling how deep the water was there!!! but man, the water was sooooooooo cold!!!... was swimming around with a knife in 1 hand lol... sooo scared that I'd suddenly look into some JaWs lol...
