Kingfish lures?

Have a medium-light rod which says 15g max lure - I know it's on the light side, but if I was to try to target Kingfish what would be some good lures to try in this weight range? From what I can tell they start from around 15g and go much higher....

15g is light for kingfish. They will take slugs, stick baits and plastics. I have not gotten one on surface but that doesn't mean they wont take them. I got a stack of small ones around the Group at Straddie the other week. They climbed all over any slug we threw at them as well as diving lures.

Where are you targeting them?

id imagine the biggest problem you'd run into using small lures is casting distance. Not sure where you are fishing exactly, but land based restricts where you can fish, so casting distance is a tool you can use to cover more ground. Having said that i know of blokes who get them just using smalish plastics.

@samsteele115 have you ever specifically targeted them landbased? i know a few members used to get small ones land based from straddy on the rocks and even where the barges used to dock

You will be able to push the weight of the lure you use up to 30g if you are careful with you cast. Have at least 60cm of line out for your cast and use a long, lobbing cast.

Don't put in a ton of power into your cast. Don't flick cast. You will break the tip of your rod.

Will you hook a kingfish? If they are there and you can get a cast in front of them, a plastic, hardbody, chrome, jig or topwater will work.

Will you land it? If there is any size to it, I'll say you're pushing your luck but it's possible.

Yeah mate! Micro jigs seem to be my go to for kingies off the rocks. Long casts just like a slug, and they can't resist the action of a jig.
