$300 flatty setup and a new boat setup FINAALLLY

Hey all  i have finally done the boat it has a seadeck casting deck from aluminium sheet and new seats and stickers we also have a watersnake geospot on it my mate has recently signed up for the flatty classic i only fish for trevs and other seaway fish so i needed to buy a $300 setup probably for the bigger flatties also some ideas on lures to fish would be great

$300 is a bit excessive for big flatties, but you are really after a good set up i would go with the Shimano Sedona 3000 and for the rod the Shimano raider flathead it has a great tip for casting and comes in multiple sizes. paired with 20 pound braid.

I'd use a reel from one of your trev / seaway setups and spend the bulk of the $300 on nice rod with good action to flick the lures.

If you are going to be flicking lures all day in the comp you want to spend the dollars there so that you are flicking and working the lures with good feel / finesse

If you decide to equip with your reel you have been using for lighter fishing a Shimano Zodias rod would suit the budget. 

If not I would suggest a Shimano Nasci on a Abu Garcia Veritas or Atomic Arrowz Rod.

I would be going less than 20lb for flatties. I am no expert but would suspect 10lb would be sufficient. The Sedona’s are a good reel for the price.

Ummmm no.  I already knew what I wanted when I bought it.  Will be a while before it happens though. Live Bait tank and electric motor.  Just wanted to see what @Mylesfisherhas done to his.

Better fishing gear then a lot of other things. 

If it's your passion then why not spend a bit more on some better gear? 

I used to use a lot of budget stuff when I was young until the 1st time I used someones better gear and then I was hooked on best stuff I could afford. 

The only downside is as you get older you start liking more and more much better and much more expensive gear. 

I might not catch any more fish with it but I enjoy using the gear more, or perhaps appreciate the feel of using it more. 

I think $300 is the butter zone for a decent fishing outfit, but that's me. 

The only person you have to justify spending any amount of money irrespective of your age is yourself, well until you get older and have to either justify or hide how much you spend to the wife.

It doesn't quite work like that unfortunately. 

Especially when the wife out of the blue says "why don't we get a new couch" and your forced to reply "I wish you said that before I spent $2500 on a couple of new fishing rods" 

But at least that conversion happened in summer so it wasn't cold spending a couple of nights sleeping on the old couch. 

Although quickly back on topic, I've always found it's better to spend the bulk of your budget buying the best reel you can and spending less on the rod. 

Especially when fishing in salt water, you want a reel that will avoid corroding, if you look after it then it will serve you well for many years to come. 

You can always upgrade the rod latter if you want.

Yes, I agree on the reel over the rod. I'm actually preferring my older glass rods again these days. (Except for throwing lures)

Good scoring the couch in summer....expert level ! haha

Yeah I got a bit overboard I got a salmi zing and I’ve just clicked with that on my Trev setup and I hope for the best btw I have 3 Rod’s not 20

Nice boat there, good for around the bay or freshwater impoundments and rivers. 

Good size deck too, plenty of room for storage or casting.

That tinnie will get you around to some decent spots for a flick at the flatties, will be good being able to be walk around barefoot on the seadeck.
