March! Mackerel!

Righto Bill fish has been and gone, anyone going to specifically target Mackerel for this month? These suckers are often caught in the bay, so there must be a good pool of anglers in with a shot!

If i can get out on my cousins boat ill be giving it a shot.

you wouldnt want to hint this spot by any chance?? Any land-based spots like headlands etc..

what gear would be used fore mackerel line wieght bait etc for landbased take it need a surf rod

I'm gona be trying tommorow. Hopefully a few decent sized schoolies will play a long.

All I use is a short overhead rod/reel combo with about 250m of 20lb line on it. But thats from a boat.

where do you go from a boat??

I have got a fairly heavy beach rod from tailor fishing once on Fraser that has since sat in the cup board. - I could put this with an Alvey or a 5600 C4 baitcaster and 25lb braid or mono.

Would this gear be appropriate??

no worries but i might have to buy some gear or raid uncles cupboards.

My mate was up at hervey bay over the chrissie holidays and it took him 15 mins to land one it was just on a metre long

Mackmauler: You already won the billfish fish or the month. You don't really need to catch a 10-15kg mackeral this month do you:cheer: . I don't think my little guy would beat a 10-15kg one

Id certainly like to get one, easier said than done. to many fish to little time. spose to be catching an enormous blue marlin over the shelf this weekend, a 10kg mackerel would make a nice troll bait.

Caught a few in Spring off Manly harbour rocks while chasing Tailor, might try with heavier gear off there
