Time for a AFO day at Barron Pocket - 3/2/08?

Recommended Posts

Well I reckon its time we had another AFO day at Baroon pocket.

What does everyone reckon?

Suggesting the usual, a fish and a feed afterwards.

I've promised Kevin and

Dan a run on an electric dam, might be a good way of keeping that promise (if your available fella's).

I reckon we could sneak it in between the Toga comp and Lenthalls. I am thinking Sunday 3/2/08.

I can bring the AFO boat if some brave souls want to row. (I've had it on Baroon before)

What sort of lures do I now have an excuse to go buy???

Anything you can cast 10m or more between 50 and 100mm long. Main target is bass.

Any depth from surface to 40 foot deep could be required depending on where the fish are.

Also Mary Cod in there, you might even get one on a bigger bass lure.

Just a reminder for those who have not gone to Baroon Pocket before,

1. It is an electric or paddle power dam only.

2. It costs $5 to take an electric powered boat on the dam, free for paddle power. Permit is purchased through an "honour box" system at the dam, so bring your $5 so you can put it in the box.(IE no change)

3. You can not have electric canoes on the dam.

4. All batteries must be secured so if the boat turns over the batteries do not fall out.

5. You can not use lead sinkers on the dam (Big W sell enviro sinkers, or use steel nuts)

6. For the bait fisho's The Bass in Baroon Pocket bite on live salt water yabbies, but I didn't tell you that. They definately bite on live shrimp, never caught one on a worm (although I think ray might have).

7. Lee specialises in trolling for Deep fish in the main basin at Baroon, it is about 120 foot deep, with fish often around 30 foot down.

8. I prefer to fish the edges, casting at lilies and weed banks and timber.

9. There are no fishing zones marked by signs on the banks in the arms of the dam.

We will probably launch from the Montville Ramp, as it is a 24 hour ramp, and we all know yaks have to be launched before sunup (dont ask me why, its a yak thing) There are BBQ's there, I'll bring a couple of kilo's of snags for a bit of a sausage sizzle for a latish lunch.

When at the Montville end, the area you can park trailers in is not visible from the picnic area, but there is plenty of room to pull the boats up on the bank where they are visible. So unless you will move all your gear from the boat into the car, best to leave boat in water until after we have had out feed.

there certainly are some deep parts of the dam, the deepest I found the other day on the sounder was 47.5M, so around 160 feet  :woohoo: so very very deep. I too prefer to target the edges and timber for fish, its just that the better fish are often found schooled deep in the main bayson, this was not the case the other day, the new ground covered by the rain has pushed the fish into the shallower water to feed

I would be in that but the Bulldog not aloud unless I can make it look like an electric. Any such thing as a 120horse electric? lol. And I am not a land based fisho thats for sure. Anyone have room?

Did someone mention LIVE YABBYS? Um er arh ever tried the fresh water variety. /crayfishmates looks sheepishly about

Mate of mine that is a crazy bass fisho in the States makes his own lures and used an actual dead crawdad to make the mold lol He sent a few over for me to check out and Customs nabbed about 10 of them because they had some unknown "stickiness" on them. Er that would be attractant. Anyway ended up with two different types and both are black...

I'd love to come, always done well there. I'll have to check my schedule(ie ask wife) though. If not, for those who havent been there a word of advise: buy some TASSIE DEVIL lures! There magic at Baroon. Just ask Angus, jimmybob or Terry about the landbased session we had there. All using tassies, casting at the same spot. Mutiple and triple hook ups! Awesome day

OK I told the dictator (I mean wife) last night and got no response, so I don’t know. I would like her to come along but since we had that snake jump in the boat (stupid me told her) she is not so keen on Baroon.

Remember that Feral – crap that was sooooo funny, I’ve never seen a Feral jump so high. For those who don’t – we had a snake cross the water and climp up the motor shaft and over the transom onto Feral’s lap. Hahahahhahahha so funny – nice friend I am hahahahahhaah I'm still pissing myself.

If I come I’ll take a yak and the cannon ball. The ball can take 3 people and the yak one so I’ll do my best to confirm things tonight and let you guys know about the available deckie spots.

For tassies, its more the movement then the colour. But Jimmy's gotton some mosters on a pink tassie. Spots and strips have done well for me too. I think the colour ive done best on was a kinda metalic finish with grades of green yellow and red.But once again, its the movement of the lure im sure

As for hardbodies, as usual purples and reds.

Spinners ive used and caught on there were green and yellow.

Stump jumpers, predateks and your jackals etc. Last time a good AFO sessions the yakkers got cained using deep diving hard bodies, mostly in purple colour. They were using a range of hard body lures at the time from memory.

To date though, for non trolling, my favourite is still the tassie for Baroon. Great for casting in snags, rocks etc

Hey guys

We have a house at maleny so i do most of my fishing in baroon.

I agree with feral that you can use salt water baits cause the bass are jsut an angry fish and will attack anything they think is food. I fished there over new years and its really hott! at the moment. Just off the boat ramp i caught some bass that went 30cm+ (on the maleny side). I also caught a 68cm eeltailed catfish, pretty cool. Though i find with a boat the best spot is outside bridge creek, jsut cause of all the snags. I caught the bass and catty on a red jackal Tn/60 Lake police, ecogear 50mm wabbler and a deep diving lure of some kind.

Also when i was there, it was so full that they weren't letting boats on the water casue of the spilway i assume, so it might be good for someone to check whether boats are allowed back on the water.

When is everyone going anyway?

Thanks

Dan

Yeah Brian I remember the snake, got rid of him with a wedge shot that would have made Tiger Woods proud I reckon! I keep a good eye out these days!

Fella's bring all your lures 50 to 100mm they will all stand a good chance of catching a bass!

Got myself some 3/4 oz spinner baits today hopefully might attract a big fat cod!

Going 3/2/08 launching at Montville end.
