Stanley River Trifecta - what a Morning

Terry and I discussed heading out to the Stanley last night, we decided on trying to fish a lot further up stream of the dam this time, so after sorting out a suitable launch spot we decided to meet at 5am for an early morning crack at some Yellas, Bass and if we were very lucky maybe even a cod :woohoo: :woohoo:

Launched at about 5:30Am, It was quite cold (I even had a Jumper on lol). we headed upstream Terry casting a white Strike king Buzz bait and I was throwing a purple and black Auspin Spinnerbait. for the first hour or so it was very quite not even a touch  the only thing that broke the silence was the sound of Water Dragons Leaping in to the water and some Platypus which were very very flighty.

Terry and I were still very confident with so much structure in the water it was hard to decide what to cast at :P lol. I cast out in the middle of nowhere and we both said jokingly that ill probly pull a Cod out of a what appeared to be baron patch, only chance of a cod id have I thought as I was using 4lb on my pixy  . a couple of cranks of the handle and I was on a good solid hit and hookup, it had some wait behind it and pulled several meters of line a couple of times. before I got sight of a Beautiful Yella, it looked so big I called it for a PB:woohoo:. got him to the surface lip griped him and boy did he have some weight ;).

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/terrys%20camera/8-04-2008-StanleyRiver-LeeStrachen-.jpg

I realized he wouldnt be as long as the couple of fish I picked up late last year but man it out weighed them by a long way. checkout how fat this thing was lol

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/terrys%20camera/8-04-2008-StanleyRiver-LeeStrach-1.jpg

and on the mat went 49cm

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020879-web.jpg

and back he goes

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020883-web.jpg

only 10 mins later and I was on again :woohoo: :woohoo:, new it wasnt as big straight away but still put up a solid fight. to my surprise it turned out to be a bass in the mid thirties

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/terrys%20camera/8-04-2008-StanleyRiver-LeeStrach-3.jpg

a quick pic and back he went.

your turn now Terry I said to him and he didnt dissapoint, he changed over to a purple TT Spinnerbait and 5 mins later he is onto his first for the morning, I called it for a bass straight away and that it was a feisty little fella at that. and Terrys first Bass on a SB

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020888-web.jpg

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020889-web.jpg

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020897-web.jpg

We regathered ourselves and got back to the task at hand. Terry put a cast right up into a wicked looking snag, he landed it perfectly.

the snag

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/terrys%20camera/8-04-2008-StanleyRiver-TerrysCodHol.jpg

He worked it out a meter or so and BAM gets nailed Big time. all I hear is ZZZZZZZZzz nothing, he has bricked me Terry yelled   He was about to try and reef him out when I said nah man dont give him some line he will come out, and that he did.

Terry working the fish hard once freed

Well thats all three species caught now we just want more lol.

a couple of bends in the river later and Terry gets nailed again not a huge fish but put up a very good fight, A yella this time and another First for Terry

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020932-web.jpg

it was his first and the bugger forgot to measure him lol id say mid to late 30's

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020936-web.jpg

thats all 3 fish for Terry now a Trifecta :woohoo: :woohoo:

we worked our way further upstream, I found a great little pocket behind a log I thought might hold a fish, cast in only to get tangled on a hanging vine close to the bank  so I paddled in making plenty of noise and retreived my lure, paddled back out to see Terry fire a cast in there and bam he is on

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020940-web.jpg

Yep its another yella and bigger than his last:woohoo: a new PB :):)

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020941-web.jpg

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020944-web.jpg

This one went 40cm. one more turn in the creek and we came to a major log jam

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020947-web.jpg

We got out had a flick then turned for home. the trip back was mostly uneventful, except this Massive turtle sitting on a log, I have seen thousands of turtles but never on quite this big, this was a big log/tree he was sitting on. id say the turtle would have been 50cm across the shell

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/stanley%20river/08-04-08/p1020953-web.jpg

I had one more massive hit and god run before the hooks pulled right back near the launch spot trolling the Spinnerbait. it was a very good fish either a big big yella or a medium sized Cod

Terry and I both had a awesome time with many firsts for Terry and awesome fish caught allround. we will most definatley be doing it again soon

Thanks for reading guys hope you enjoyed it

Phenominal day. There's a few things that come to mind: The time and location of some of these strikes. It was pretty cool and funny when Lees yella hit, as he mentioned in the report. Then his bass:

I looked at the spot, said out loud: 'might be a cod there'... but decided not to have a cast. Well Lee had a cast, a few cranks of the handle and bam! he's on. Geez :( I should have cast there :(

Around the next bend I see this:

8-04-2008-StanleyRiver-StructureCam.jpg

And I said something like, Lee you'll be excited when you see this!! Then sure enough, I flick the spinner into the heart of the thing and let it stink before retrieving.

BAM

bzzzzzt bzzt bzzzzzzztt bricked.

:o :O :o :O crap

Tried straight pulling him out, that clearly wasn't going to work. Lee told me to give him some slack, gave him some gave him a few seconds then gave him a tug

There's the feeling of him swimming, sweet! Pull up a bit more and now he's clear of that snag again. By this stage I think we all know its a cod, or at least hoping it is:P Then that big flash of green :woohoo: Time to ease up on the drag (had it cranked up fairly high - didn't want to give these fish a free shot at bricking me ) and secure the lip grips in... didn't want my thumbs in their mouths.. ouchie

The Cod felt awesome for a few reasons. It was sort of what you read about, nice big snag that you fire a spinner into then have the cod slam it before quickly running back and running you around a log or two. Awesome little fight on 8lbs

then the snag Lee was on about:

p1020945-web.jpg

So Fishy looking. You can see the front end of my yak on the left. Between that and the green leaves you can see some vine hnging down. That's what lee got caught up on, I fired it in deep without hooking anything, other than a nice yella :woohoo: Sorry Lee :D

All throughout the morningy ou could hear huge splashes as suicide bombers dived into the water. I mean water dragons. Water dragons jumping from the tops of trees and landing in the water. All of them had been about 50m away....

Then I'm paddling along, hear some branches break ABOVE ME, then a HUGE splash just behind me.

This BIG dragon fell from the top of the tree and landed, about a foot behind my kayak.

Well that was damn funny   oops watch those trees and bank as I continue to laugh

Good thing it didn't land on my head though :S

Awesome day out.

PS: oh my yella was 41cm.. :P

I reckon there must be a few cod in there, and tons of yellas. I'd be happy to go up there and have another crack. Sorry to sound like I'm rubbing it in, but man... I'm still pumped about that Cod, fought so well and down into its snag.:woohoo: I want another

If there's any two guys I reckon deserve a cod, it would be Jimmy and STU. You guys have pulled cracker fish out so many times.

I think me breaking my rod in my first yak session at stanley was one of the best things that happened:P After that I bought a good rod and reel and started taking my lure fishing a bit more seriously. I don't know how, but after that I've started to have better sessions, and more frequent decent fishing sessions. Maybe a bit more time, effort and patience..

Shortie: I had to take my triple mount off, and slide right forward. My kayak sits a bit higher in the water than lees. the top of my seat was scraping on the log. Then there was the smaller log that we had to climb over while pushing the yaks under...

Some good territory up there, only accessible by keen yakers. If you can launch without getting extremely muddy or going for a swim you're doing pretty well :)

Jeff: somewhere in the stanley a fair way up from the bridge crossing neil, ash, lee, stu, angus, jimmybob etc have all been .. I can't say for sure exactly where I was ;) I just followed Lee

We wanted to make sure we were in that sort of small, skinny and extremely snaggy water. The neurem road crossing that we'd been to before would have been awesome if the dam level was lower, but it's no where near as nice at the moment as where we went today.

Shortie: you would have had to practice your wet reentry then:P Swim under the log :woohoo:

Edit: Um.. I just remembered ... I lost my brag mat:(

I dropped it in the water earlier to wash dirt off it and saw that it appeared to float, or at least suspend. Later I was trying to clear up my yak a bit on the bigger yella so I could measure him, threw the mag and paddle in the water so they weren't in my way.. I know the paddle floats, and thought the mag suspended.....

Cleared everything up (rod spinner etc) and went to pick up my mat

Um... apparently I was wrong, it sinks.. just very slowly :(
