'Gulp Juice'

After looking at all my packets of open Gulps today I thought there has to be a better way of storng them. Even though I ziplock the pack after opening, and then store it in a Gulp wallet the packs still seem to leak drying them out and making a mess in the wallet.

I just looked at Gulp buckets again (BCF - 2 for $50) but they have crap plastics in them, and besides I really only want the juice to so I can make a screw top container my own Gulp bucket.

Does anyone know anything about the liquid? Ingredients? Tried to replicate it? Anything at all?

Yea I looked at the spray and although a good idea, for $10 less I can get same amount of liquid to use plus about 30 sp's from the 2 buckets.

I think I might just bite the bullet and get the buckets and let you know how it goes.

I have tried the Gulp Spray, Stimulate Spray, Dizzy's Garlic, Craw Dad and IMO unless you are dead sticking the spray is a bit of a Red Herring.

The skrike and bite you get from a fish on a plastic is pure reaction bassed some times even territoral. There are better and cheaper plastics on the market that IMO work better than Gulp.

Hi folks, effectiveness aside I have tried many different things for gulp storage and have now settled on nalgene camping screw top containers. These are fantastic and are made to be bumped around - you can get them at specialist camping stores. The screwtop cylindrical containers aren't guaranteed leak proof like some other nalgene kit (like the drink bottles) but I have one thats about half full of juice (from old packets, plus a bucket, and then some gulp garlic spray) and I'm reasonably careful with it. Even so, it goes sideways and upside down in the backpack and as long as the lid is screwed on I haven't had a leak.

Hope this helps! I have tried plenty of other brands but the nalgene ones are the only ones that seem to work. The gulp juice must have some special viscosity that make it leak out of most materials and past almost all seals - but I haven't looked back since getting these ones. Cheers

Nighey,

You're the man. Tell me more! How big is the container? Is it shallow and flat or long and deep? How many plastics do you have swimming at a time? How much juice do you think is in there? How successful is it all?

I envisage a rubber sealed screwtop container thats about the size of those 1L butter containers so its not too deep, but more wide so a bigger selection of lures are floating there for the picking.

I've gone through a couple of jars of the 4" swimming mullet in pumpkinseed, they're really great lures, but are super soft, so lose tails very easily. They definately do leak once opened, so have to keep them flat. I've often meant to get some good watertight jars and pour all the juice and a collection of random gulps into it.

Just raid your wife or mums tupperware cupboard :P

I refuse to buy more gulps because of the pathetic packaging they come in. I haven't had any more success with them then any other plastic or lure so I can't see the need to put up with the mess.

i too have tried different types of "leak proof jars/containers" ive enve tried using plumbers tape and rubberbands around the seal. they all seem to work for about 2-3 outings but then slowly start to leak again. it really is a pain in the a55

Hi bootyinblue

The nalgene containers are almost exactly the size of the 1kg margarine containers (similar to the original gulp ones in fact) - same sort of dimensions. I keep loads of gulps in there - twenty or thirty probably - I just dump the lot in there when I open a packet (and the juice). Every so often I top it up with the spray bottles (don't even know if this is the same stuff but it seems to work). I've been using the nalgene container for a couple of months now with no probs - they are about $7 from the colorado (I think) camping goods store on Albert St in Brissie CBD but you can get them at other places.

The only problem I seem to have is occassionally when its full i have to root around for the appopriate gulp (its got worms, minnow grubs, turtlebacks in watermelon and pumpkinseed so its a bit of a miscellaneous grab bag), so I should get some longish plastic tweezers so I don't have to put half my hand in there...

I tried a lot of different types of screw lid containers in this size, everything from bigw I could find and from coles etc. I read about the nalgene ones on a us site - they can be hard to find though. I think the difference might be that they are rated as "lab quality" - whatever that means. Don't really know what I'm talking about there though so science types please don't flame me.

just my 2c

Mate... worth more than 2c. Its up at the $2 mark. The container has convinced me to give it a go, as I would have been mighty peeved if I bought $50 worth and all the liquid leaked out of what I thought would be water tight.

Laughed at your 'grab bag' description and first read it as 'grub bag' which pretty much describes my work truck on a saturday night :-)

Sorta OT but the real hardcore nalgenes are FULL ON. I've dropped one filled with water from an 80ft ropes course straight onto a rock and all I got was a scratch on it. No cracks, no water spillage, no detrimental affects other than some character on the casing.

That's not OT at all. I just don't feel like such a lonely voice anymore...:-) Its not quite 80ft on a ropes course, but I had mine in the bottom of the pram while fishing Newstead and folded the pram up while it was still there, to put it in the car. After stamping on the folding arm with all my 100kg (too many pizzas) I finally realised the gulp container was stuck between two pieces of steel. No leaks (thank god or the wife would have throttled me)...Good gear!

Ok.... anyone that has been following this R&D project here is an update.

Bad news - 2 buckets for $50 has finished so I paid $30 for one bucket today.

Good news - Found the perfect leakproof (well so far) container also at BCF. Its Hayes brand storage containers which are rectangular and have lid locks on all 4 sides. I bought the 1.1L one for $6.50.

I tried the ones in Kmart and Target which have locks only down the long sides and they were not watertight (hope they did not mind me pouring a little milkshake in each and shaking it up and down...)

So now I can transfer all the open packs of Gulps to their new home, put some overflow in the original bucket and leave it at home, wash and clean up my Gulp wallet to use for only unopened packets and we should be all sweet again.

Here are a couple of pics of my new storage system for plastics.

Full packs in here DSC00075AFO.jpg

Open packs in here DSC00087AFO.jpg

And just a side thought. I cut about 2 cm in from the edge of the bucket seal and by leaving the edge there when you screw the lid back down its watertight.

Think the cats will be very interested in my bin now till it gets collected.

Looks good. I tried these ones - are you landbased (with backpack etc) or can you keep them relatively upright? I took each of my containers and filled them with water and food dye, then left them with my 2 year old to play with. Everything leaked (and stained) except for the nalgene round container - so let me know how it goes as I'd love a square (or rectangular one) which would stack with my other tackle boxes more effectively.

Thanks for the post!

PS I've had a gulp fruit salad for about 6 weeks now (including dipping ones I've been using (saltwater) into the bucket) and have had no ill effects...so you shouldn't have too many problems there.

the best container i have found is a kraft peanut butter jar - it still leaks but not as bad as the "waterproof" containers i have tried. i also added plumbers tape around the seal and a big red posties rubberband, and i keep it in the ziploc bags.

  • 3 months later...

Just thought I would rejig this post after fishing on the weekend. Nic Keechie had a packet of plactics where there plastics were getting a little tough, so into the gulp fruit salad they went and came out an hour later all soft and pliable and ready for the hook.

Still have not had any spillage from the container even though it rolled around on its side for a while, but most of the time its jammed under the side pockets in the boat.

TUPPERWARE!!!! its the only type of container that will guarentee liquid tight seals or your money back and lifetime replacement... you can get black and blue lids so its looks like a normal container and they come in all shapes and sizes to fit whatever you need to put in there.

Just reading this thread and noticed that I have done somthing similar to what is pictured above.

Because the packets seemed to leak oil I put all the SP's in a tupperware type of container and added a splash of canola oil mixed with the gulp oil...

maybe thats why I havnt caught any fish :P , the canola is putting them off, but tuna oil would be better.
