What I've bought...

Pretty chuffed with my new setup. Daylite sport 8.0 yak ($300 retail) I bought second hand for $50 basically in perfect condition. Turned it into a fishing kayak. Very practical, plenty of storage and actually very very comfy. Grand total of $62 with the extras. Not bad! Now to find some time to use it...

Shimano Speedmaster $135.00 delivered (US)

I have not told my wife about the Speedmaster yet.. just breaking it up a bit.

just bought a membership to the dark side,

post-7046-1445989547_thumb.jpg

down from $999 to $599, i've been looking at yak for a while now and couldn't pass up the 40% off offer BCF is having until tomorrow. It's on lay-by so i will have it in a month or so, hopefully before the noosa river to reef. then i'll be on the water freezing my nuts off!

It's going to need some pimping... seat and a couple more rod holders to begin with, then maybe a sounder and whatever else i need.

advice and suggestions welcome

That's a hell of a lot of yak for $600, good buy B)

For the seat whatever you do, don't skimp. You really can tell the difference between a cheapy and a good quality one.

Yeah thanks Ant, i thought it was a bargain too!

I was originally looking at the X-13 but the BCF bloke talked me out of it as it's my first yak and it's mainly going to be used in the maroochy and noosa systems (can walk to the river @ cotton tree in 5 minutes) but he said its good enough to get outside once i'm confident enough and have the paddle fitness up. Reckons he takes his Pro Explorer 10-15km out of the maroochy river and regularly takes it to Old Woman island off mudjimba (7km ish from mooloolaba).

I've checked it out, and if i decide i need a rudder, it looks easy enough to fit one up even if they're not designed to take one.

After seeing a couple of comparisons to a Century surf casting rod on another forum (nowhere near as good but to be even compared is something else) I decided to splash out on Mojiko Surf Cannon from Anaconda. Currently $40 for 3.6m of carbon (not fibreglass as the spec says). Had a try with it today down at Decker Park. Cannot believe the value. Was throwing 2oz + mullet strip almost out of sight with nothing more than an overhead thump (with a lazy pendulum it will rocket). Never caught anything but got broken up by what was probably a large stingray on a small whole squid. Had a few flicks with a Tailor slug (40g i think). This did actually go out of sight. I have plans to replace the guides which are very heavy for the rod but if you are after a bit of distance from the shore I can't see you beating this for value.

$40!!!! incredible - I might go and get another one :woohoo:

Got myself a new Daiwa Generation Black Wicked Weasal (6'10" 2-6kg spin) and matched it with a Daiwa 2500 Freams... Super smooth reel and the rod feels A LOT more expensive then what I paid for it!!! Just gotta get some braid for it now and will probably throw some 8 pound Suffix Matrix Pro!!! ;)

Today my collection of new Cod lures arrived.

In the package was 2 lures that have a new experimental paint and fleck pattern and these things look just amazing.

The fleck with clear coat over the top gives a 3d holographic appearance to the lures which when moved look like a 3d rainbow.

I cannot wait to give these ones a swim for a Cod.

These are all hand carved from Western Red Cedar with one piece wires so they should be pretty bullet proof.

  • 1 month later...

Had half an hour to kill at lunch so went to have a window shop at Jones' Tackle. Was greeted by the Runt man who sold me a Shimano Talica 8 and Shimano Terez 20-40lb.

Awesome little reel with plenty of nuts and enough room to fit 400m of PE4. My regular outfit is a talica 12 which I thought looked small, this thing in comparison is tiny. The overhead terez is nice too. Seems to have a more progressive action than the spin terez models.

A can for scale:

Should be a bit more sporting than my usual gear and still have enough balls to stop some pretty big fish.
