Tilapia fishing day Lake Kurwongbah Saturday 15.12.2012

On Saturday 15.12.12 the PRFMA will be having a Tilapia fishing/competition day at Lake Kurwongbah to remove Tilapia and raise funds for stocking Native Fish into Lake Kurwongbah.

Pest Fish Out Native Fish IN

Location: Mick Hanfling Park Lake Kurwongbah.

Time: 1.30pm to 5.00pm

Entry: By Donation, participants must be registered, all welcome.

The purpose of this event is to remove Tilapia and raise funds for stocking Lake Kurwongbah with Native Fish. ALL funds raised will go to fish stocking.

Several prizes have been donated so far but would be happy to accept any prizes or donations for this event.

Categories/Prizes yet to be announced, there will be pest fish and a Native Fish category.

Native Fish are to be Catch Photo Release on a measure only to enter Native Fish category.

Have had a few enquiries about this event,

Had a few people ask about fishing the native section only, if you are keen to do this then do so by all means. The main objective of the stocking program in Kurwongbah was to create a Native Fish fishery. The prize for this section is a very nice collection of Aussie made timber lures from various makers.

Also had a few enquiries about the cost of entry, have not set a specific price it is entry by donation.

Prizes, major prizes will be by lucky draw, every one who enters will have a chance to win.

Still organising prizes and happy to accept any sponsors or donations.

I have still never caught a Tillwacker. What's the best rig to target them?

Peeled prawn pieces under a float won't last too long

Earthworms, pretty good under a float or lightly weighted.

People I have seen fill there buckets quickly and get some good sized ones fish with 20lb mono handline, small sinker, no2 long shank hook with earthworms.

Having never fished for them until the tilapia cull a few years ago, I used a handline with about 10lb mono and a tiny hook (size 10 long shank i think) with a piece of prawn or eathworm on it and a little splitshot to help it sink. This seemed to work no worries.

I used to slat then on 6lbs braid with 6lbs leader. Small peeled prawns on a small gar style hook about 30m under a float. Really simple fishing

Seq water are providing bins for disposal of pest fish.

You are allowed to keep any native as long as you comply with bag limit and size regulations.

Note no SIP permit is needed to fish in Kurwongbah.

I've heard fresh slices of koala work too, but I'm taking a heap of out-of-date redclaw tails that I'm more than happy to share for bait. Redclaw flesh works well.
