queensland Silver Perch at NP

Was out at the dam today for a couple of hours. Landed a couple of bass before I got onto a fish which put up an unusual fight - a Silver Perch - a first for me. Do these fish normaly take lures? It went for the black and silver G- Vibe.

I have caught quite a few out of there on bait, but never on lures, they have a pretty small mouth, so I didnt think they would attack lures but u have proved me wrong mate

Yeah they do take lures.

Just not as readily as Aaron said to their small mouth.

Yeah Aaron, I noticed how small the mouth was. And the lure came out of the mouth pretty easily, too, as soon as I got it out of the water...

they r like bream, small mouth, a bit aggressive. so generally tiny lure's used to target them

That is interesting Jimmy. How big do they get and how fast do they grow?

Why don't we see more of them if they are a better sport fish?

harder then a bass not the one i have caught they were pretty crap compeared to bass were did you get yours jimmy?

Got a 42cm one in the Severn River a few years back and he was pretty good eating fresh from a clean river. Have heard differing views though.

He took a bit of line but I thought a bass would go harder (but I've never caught a bass on a line before though:blush: )

Treated them like cat fish out west. Pest fish / bycatch when fishing for yellow belly on bait.

I've caught a silver on a Dinky Darwin Dart (my memory might be failing) in Somerset and at least one on fly at Glassy's Fishing World.

It sorta hit the lure pretty hard, but I found it lacked the power of a bass the same size. Got it fairly close in too, so it didn't have much opportunity to run.

If it took a black and silver G-vibe, maybe it thought it was a juvinile silver. Are they cannabalistic?

Good sized one. I've only ever seen a couple (from here) and they are usually a lot smaller. Good work.

Silvers give a good account of themselves. They fight well but both Bass and Silvers fight pretty evenly.

Here's a 40 odd cm one I caught on a Spinnerbait as I was firing a few quick casts up in the shallows of an arm as I was making my way around. Got him about 100m away from where Brian got his.

He hit the lure sweetly and managed to get the first hook, stinger hook and 3inch soft plastic trailer perfectly down the hatch. I don't know how he did it as the gap of both the hooks was wider then his mouth :S .

Angus got an absolute beast of around 8cm on live shrimp I remember. Not very common tho.

I have caught several silvers out at NPD over the years, most were taken from shallow bays and weed beds, but also have taken several from 20 to 30ft on bait. One of the best bays [when it had water] was the bay between bullocky and the rangers house.

I have taken them on s/baits,g/vibes,and small h/bodies plus shrimps,worms and grasshoppers.

When fishing from the bank they are usually not far out. Most of the ones i have got put up a good fight as they are all muscle.
