Terry and I headed up to Borumba today, with 2 main goals get Terry into a Hobie Revo for the day (thanks for the lend Paul) and get him a bloody Toga. He got to my place 30 mins late   we got on the road at 4:30am got to the dam set the yaks up and headed straight to our first port of call the little bay on the left full of sticks. I was throwing a Jitterbug and a Cultiva surface lure whilst Terry was throwing a Strike king mini buzz bait, we were greeted by very cold conditions with loads of fog.

We threw everything but the kitchen sink at them over the next 3 hours but just couldnt rais a scale not even a decent hit :angry:. We decided we had done everything we could there so moved on towards the back end of the dam. I picked up the first fish of the day a little bass on a TT SB he hit very soft but pulled hard for his size

about 10 mins later I had a little mishap   my rod and reel that was sitting in the rear rod holder got tangled around my paddle as I tried to pull it out to reverse up after unsnaging a line, 2 seconds later and bamm its o the bottom  . I tried casting for it but couldnt pick it up. I was about to go for a swim when Terry finally snagged it and pulled it up :woohoo: :woohoo:

So a quick bite to eat and were back fishing, but man it was tough just couldnt get onto anything, its about 2:30pm by this stage and we had made our way well up into the back of the dam, we finally saw some action when Terry threw his Buzbait back into a little incove had a good swipe at it but missed, he wound the buzzbait in halfway and threw out a spinnerbait he had rigged on the Bc outfit a couple of cranks of the handle and his on:woohoo: a couple of jumps wow a nice fish and his off :(

Score Toga 1 Terry 0

To add insult to injury 2 mins later I cast back to the left of the same inlet with a Spinnerbait and wack im on not a huge fish but pulling hard and doing all the usual acrobatics. got him along side the boat lip grippers in and a quick photo and measure. he went 54cm

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030155-web.jpg

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030158-web.jpg

Terry was the next to see action, he cast out his mini buzzbait and a Toga smashed it as soon as it hit the water, I wippped the camera out and started taking shots, this was a good fish too probly 70cm or so

it took a few jumps. stripped some line

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030165-web.jpg

He fought it beautifully got it out of some rough country, got it yak side it took one last run and well ill let the picture tell the story

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030163-web.jpg

Score Toga 2 Terry 0

only five minutes later were onto the next little bay Terry gets hit on the buzzbait again the fish jumped and went wild tail walking, I thought he had him beat but once again Mr Toga had better ideas wrapping him around a tree and ping there she goes hooks pulled.

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030168-web.jpg

Score Toga 3 Terry 0

by this Stage I had grabbed one of Terrys Buzzbaits off him :P they seemed to be doing the trick, I also suggested he put a stinger on as did I.

I saw a swirl about 10 meters in front of me cast the Buzz bait out and instant hookup, Im sure these Toga think there birds, like all the others he set for the air but I was lucky enough to keep him on and get him yak side, put the lipgrippers in him and landed number 2 for the trip :):) a quick photo and measure and back he goes

he went 65cm

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030171-web.jpg

and a head shot with the lure that did the damage

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030170-web.jpg

In between these hookups we were getting loads of hits mostly fish swiping and missing, Well Terry was getting loads of hits, I w had only had the 3 but 2 fish ;) .

Its so much fun watching a Tiga hit a surface lure in super shallow water and thats what happend yet again I tossed the Buzz bait along a nice little grass bed and got a hitbut didnt hook i stopped winding and let the lure drop as I did the fish hit it on the drop :woohoo: another Toga I hooked this one close to the yak and had to stop him dead so he wouldnt brick me man they have some power for there size, i pulled himj up in time and landed this nice 64cm specimen

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030174-web.jpg

By this stage Terry was getting a little more than frustrated, the entire dam new it too. his confidence had dropped but the fish were still biting and in god numbers so back on the job he was determined to nail one of the buggers. and that he did , He hooked a nice fish on the buzz bait and this time luck is on his side its a nice dirty fight with the usual jumping all over the shop as well as being pulled round a log twice. he got him yak side as I joined him with the camera. got the gripper in him and landed his first ever Toga.

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030177-web.jpg

a fist pump to celevrate

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030178-web.jpg

the fish went 65cm not a bad pb to start

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030182-web.jpg

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030183-web.jpg

Score Toga 3 Terry 1:woohoo:

While Terry was retying a leader I noticed a nice swirl and fired the buzz bait in band damm missed, fired a second cast in for desert and boy did he want it hit like a freight train, pulled a bit of line and got me around a log  , took my time and managed to get him out and land the best of the day at 69cm :):)

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/barumba/25-04-08/p1030188-web.jpg

It was starting to get darkish by this stage so we started working out way back there were loads of Toga hitting the surface and we had a couple more hits but no hookups. we got all the fish and all the action from 2:30pm til dark. what an awesome afternoon, goes to shoe how fast a day can turn around. We couldnt for the life od us work out the bass or yallas but who cares when theres Toga like that on offer :woohoo: :woohoo:

Yes. The first fish I lost was only after 3 seconds or so, so meh wasn't too worried.

The 2nd one was a good fight and thought for sure I had him.. He was within 2 metres of the yak whne ht ehooks pulled, I could see him clearly and the buzz bait, and could see the buzz bait come free and he go back the other way :(

The 3rd... i was moving in on that section of the bay, couldn't slow down in time and he wrapped me around a tree, tried to back up but.. mmmm out came the hooks. I'm sure anyone on the dam would have heard me, it was a four letter word beginnign with F... yep:( Lost a good one:(

The 4th (that I caught) i was churning out bricks, let me tell you!!

I fired a cast past that timber visible next to the yak. It struck, danced and went under and around that log...

Think about this, See where my kayak is next to that log? My line went from the back of my yak, around the log and the toga was kicking around where my kayak was..

Yes, fully wrapped around and seemingly unable to move as its kicking around, I was squeezing out industrial sized bricks while I tried to unwrap him around the log.. All the while the only thing I could feel on my line was a fish on the end and that worrying feeling of the line rubbing on something... (8lbs main, 10lbs leader)

Then after I got him free he shot off under the log again, crazy!

But hey, I caught 1, got my first ever Toga, dropped a few but still had a lot of fun doing it... I dont even hvae to get a hook up to have fun with surface lures. Simply seeing fish swipe them is (for me) very exciting:)

Edit:

Just to note - I put a stinger back on my buzz baits well before I even got a hook up, I'd had about 3 or 4 solid strikes with a new buzz bait (lost the other in a tree.. apparently casting and then watching your mates lure instead of watching how far yours is going is a BAD idea) Not that it mattered, my toga was hooked on the normal hook :D

Fantastic report Lee. Great fishing tale. You gotta submit that to BnB.B)

Terry, Looks like you've done your apprenticeship and finally been issued with your trade certificate.:P I was worried you weren't going to get there. But all good in the end. Great fish.:woohoo:

Thanks guys, there's been way too many hits n misses at Ewen for toga, a quick flick at Hinze and even 3 sessions at borumba (arvo, morning and then another arvo, which even involved a couple of toga hitting my lures) for 0 toga.

Happy to finally bag one :D

Thats an awesome report.

Well done on pesistance.

I know a lot of people would give up after fishing that long before action.

Lee: Mate can I get the photo's with the buzzbaits. Rob will be stoked to hear how well they did up there! A true testimont to the little lure.

Werewolf, pretty hard at times mate, gotta pull the mat tight and keep the fish straight on it... can be hard

yeah brag mats are a pain when you dont have a flat surface to put them on, next week at work im going to make a s/s measure and attach a measuring sticker to it, should work a treat

Well done guys it's good to see they were biting and in good numbers.

Hey Terry did you like my revo as a fishing yak? I got to admit it's good to see my yak in the photos with fish on the line instead of being the yak the photos are taken from;)

It's about time Lee had to use his camera to catch someone else landing the fish:lol:

I'm glad you got your first toga Terry and I'll bet it's not the last either.

cheers nodds:lol:

Hey mate, I posted a response on AKFF

I found it stable mate, was able to stand up in it without any issues :)

Lee said you only had the stock rudder on? found it sluggish to turn at times.

only other concern was something that will take a bit of time for me to get use to - the rudder/turning mechanism. found myeslf pushing the right/left peddle at times to steer (when fishing and not thinking about being in a hobie:P) and that if you turn rudder full right, it will stay there until you take it off, unlike foot control rudders which sort of go back to straight if you dont hold them down.

But yeah mate, good, very pleased with it:) I enjoyed the speed of it, wouldhave been good to see what speed we were doing... although I was probably too busy stuffing my face with food or drinks to read the speed if we had a GPS.
